Probably needs a radiator flush as well, also check your brakes (I know you say you replaced them when the time comes, so that probably means they are fine, but its an easy thing to check. If you haven't replaced the rears yet, its probably about time.

Tires are a good thing to check too, but I'm guessing you've already replaced those once. . .

Theres no need to be ashamed, you, unlike many people, RECOGNIZE that you've been ignoring your car, and understand that its bad. Thats the first step. Now just take action, and you should be all good.

ah, yes, air filter and cabin air filter are definitely due, forgot about that, you should see a good MPG increase as a consequence.

I would highly recommend getting on Amazon, and buying the Bentley Press Complete Official Mini Cooper repair manual.

Tell you everything you need to know, and how to do it in great detail. Best book out there for the Mini.

you might not wanna clean the air filter that frequently. K&N filters are great for flow, not so much for actual filtering, especially when brand new/clean. A slightly dirty K&N filters a lot better than a clean one. A clean K&N only filters with about 90% efficiency. After the first 1000 miles or so, it gets way better though (>95%), as a small amount of dirt builds up on it. I wouldn't clean it more than every 30k if I were you, each cleaning breaks it down a little bit, and makes it filter worse.

A bulk buy on Tuesday from DP (thanks to their sale) and now $75 for the Bentley repair manual (thanks to Gromit's salesmanship)...

...it's been a tough week on the wallet -- and it's only Thursday...

The Bentley manual is great. There is reference to BMW tools, but they also list alternatives. It's a 3" thick book!

DNA, may he rest in peace.

Hoses...

In addition to the radiator flush, check all the coolant hoses at the same time. 'Twould be a shame to fill it up with brand new coolant, only to blow a hose and lose it all over the ground!

Only time I ever heard of a dealer replacing a failed Midland 5-speed with a Getrag......you sure you now have a Getrag tranny?
I'd change the engine oil at least twice as often, (every 7,500 miles), as you currently are.

I'd also change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles or so...and I'd replace the fluid with a full synthetic like Amzoil, Redline or Royal Purple.

I too am curious about the possible Midalnds to Getreg swap.....

I'll add that the belt should be changed every 50k on a Cooper. To cooling system should be flushed at 70k too....

Glad to hear a story of a higher milege early build Cooper like mine still trugging along.

I am guessing that you are the original owner of your MINI. If you have the owner's manual, read what it suggests for the various servicings. It's also a good idea to lubricate various parts. I applaud you for starting this post. I bet it will help others who were too shy to ask.
