so i spent the last week removing my rear seats since there is no room for anyone to sit there. i started on saturday. removed the seats, them started shaping some cardboard for a false floor. finished up everythignon wednesday night. the final product came out way better than expected and i'm very please with it. pus now i have extra storage under my floor. will post pics over the weekend when i take some. the only thing left to do is find some blue carpet tht matches the blue from teh factory and put the mini logo in the center of it. so if you kow any places to find that please let me know. but agian i will post pics once i have them.
if you want to know how i did it exactly, just ask i have no problems sharing.
later
ja

Sanity 29: you're on to something. I think you should send your Idea to the patent office quick.

With the seats down there is a little less than 6 cubic feet in the rear. With your conversion you loose weight and increase the storage space. This is a viable option for those who want only 2 seats ( I use my back seat all the time for people so it isn't as good an option for me. If you make the wood floor extend out to the edges of the cabin I would think that it could look pretty good. You could even build in some storage on the sides or do whatever you like.
the idea of matching blue carpet with logo is great. Since there is more space now why not add an amp and subwoofer?
Please do post some pictures. Maybe it is big enough for a bed or mattress! Front seats down of course.

Finally someone has taken some real initiative. Can't wait to see pics. As far as carpeting goes, not too sure, but what about trying to find some matching carpet that is used for speaker boxes? Might be more durable than your run-of-the-mill carpeting. Just a thought

Just go to your Mini dealer and purchase a replacement carpet panel for the very rear of the car. There is probably enough material there to trim out the correct pattern to fit the front portion of the rear cabin. I bet that will work just fine!

Make a cutting template first out of cardboard, check to see if it fits within the overall size of the rear carpet panel, if it fits, just order the addtional carpet panel from your Mini Dealer, you'll have a perfect match!

Lets us know if that works, I'd love to turn my Mini someday into a panel van!

Did you use any type of insulating foam or dynamat to help block out road noise? How easy is it to put the seats back in if you want to haul some people around?

here are the pics i promised of my rear seat removal. the only thing i need/want to add is the mini logo in the center of it. but still need to get matching blue carpet for that. also, i will be adding more support to it. as the back piece of wood was what i had left over from cutting the front piece. so what i will do is add an aluminum triangle to each side with aluminum poles going along the side of the board to add more support there. otherwise it is pretty strong. let me know what you think.

to c615586 i didn't add any materials other than what was used to construct the floor. i don't reall y get much more road noise from this. the only thing that got louder was the sound of the changer changing discs. as for actually mounting it, it's all held down by gravity. it hasn't moved on my yet and i've driven pretty hard since i put it in (because i got a pulley installed afterwards). the rear seats shouldn't be too hard to reinstal. but might take longer than a minute or two. nothing like the corrado was.

I rather like this optional no seat back. It opens up more flat space in case you have a need for:
A small bed for a nap.
A place for a pet to hang out, maybe on a towel, pad, or blanket.
A place to store samples or goods if you are a salesperson.
A place to store a spare tire that MINIUSA forgot to provide
A place for a couple of kids to hang out
A place to lie down to watch DVDs from the dash
A place to store a ton of batteries to power the electric conversion of the MINI.
A place to store a HUGE weapons arsenal for mini_street_racer- I think he ran out of space.
A place to store internally a fold up bicycle or a ton of skateboards.
A place to put a bunch of plants for that "tropical jungle look"
A place to cook up some fried eggs for breakfast when camping.
A flat place for some mega sized custom built multi amp -four 12" woofer speaker enclosure!
Or use the space as a shell for a MINI sized camper.
And I would suggest a cover for the CD changer just to keep it out of sight.

well, the cd changer will be hidden once i get a sub, amp for sub, and amp for the rest of the system. wait till you guys see what i'm going to do with that. plus i will be adding more storage space by doing so. well, not more but not loosing much either. as you can see, there is plenty of room under the false floor for storage as well. that is what i do. i've got my frisbee golf discs there, some cleaning supplies, and even an extra long sleeve in case the the nights get a bit cold.

Would it have been possible to leave them in or would the new floorboard not sit flush? Just curious, b/c I might do the same, but heard that removing the seat belt inserts is a little bit of a pain to remove.

Ditto... also, some details on constructing the floor would be awesome

Looks great! Great job!!!

One more request.... Could you make a parts list with measurements for the plywood piece? Also, where did you get the carpet for the panel?

I think I would definitely be interested in taking the seats out if I go on a road trip, since it would just be me and my girlfriend... and we (she) could definitely use the extra space!

Thanks in advance!

Wondering if there would be room to put an amp underneath the false floor? Looks like it from the pics

Sanity, I have a suggestion. Items in the car should be bolted down. In the event of a roll over type accident, all of the loose stuff in the cabin become missles. Large or heavy things like sub boxes can be dangerous. the thin leading edge of the new floor may pack a lot of energy in the right instance. Just my .02
