Falken Ziex ze912 912 Experiences

Ok,
So I know Avon Tech 550s are good all season Ultra High Performance and Kumho ASX etc.
Does anyone have experience with Falken Ziex ZE912 tires on their Mini? I only need these for summer (and cold fall and spring hence the all season choice) I will be putting winter tires on a different set of wheels.

Looking for experience only... Comparisons...
Yes they are inexpensive...
Any help is greatly appreciated

Wet wheather performance?

Has anyone used these tires? I am sure many of us would appreciate an opinion.

if you only need them for summer, why are you looking at all season tires? They are all fine tires, but you can get more performance for the same price if you don't need a M+S tire

As far as the falkens, they are fairly similar to the ziex 512 (they replaced them), which was a good value, high performance all season tire.

The 912s just came out- I have the 512s and about 14k on them. They've been great, but are getting sort of loud now with about 40% tread left. I hear the 912 are better all around, though. For the value, you can't beat it. We're not all made of money. I would buy the 912s if I needed tires now- they're at the top of my list for a/s.

many like the Toyo Proxes 4, too. Also affordable.

They are new so little out there yet.

Will do a simple search on the internet.
Looks like very good in all respects (handling wet or dry and comfort), snow is good.

Some vendors still show the old Ze-512 as available.

What size were you interested in?
205/55-15 360 treadwear
205/50-16
205/45-17
215/45-17

Some owners like the All Seasons for the longer wear, reasonable prices and more comfortable ride along with a balance of good enough dry and wet handling.

This is also exactly what they said when the azenis 215 were replaced by the 615. And guess what, the 615 suck *** compared to the old azenis.

the worst part is the new ziex are a good 10 dollars more expensive. also the tread on the 512 looks much better to me. I just hope the new zeix have stiffer sidewalls. (like much stiffer)

Well i can confirm that the sidewall is stiffer. The Ziex 512 was used a lot by the Euro car crowd to achieve the stretched tire look due to it's nice super soft sidewall. People have all been reporting that the new 912's don't stretch nearly as well and it's due to a stiffer sidewall.

www.discounttirezone.com is $68ea, but i dont know the shipping cost. I got mine from discount tire's/America's tire's ebay store where they have free shipping for $76ea. They did not have these tires on the site but I called and they set me up a wheel tire package with the ze-912's with free mounting and balance, free shipping and tax free. And you can get the hazard warranty and take it to any discount tire store if u have any problems. also by calling in the order they said it is much faster then doing it over ebay. heres a link to the ebay store http://stores.ebay.com/Discount-Tire-Direct-Auctions phone # 888-459-4081

I got the 912s in 215/50R16s ($69 incl. shipping from DT Direct) and put them on Black Konig Feathers (15 lbs.) from Altamini - also at a great price. Saved 5 lbs. per tire/wheel over OE Bridgespokes (mostly the wheels!).

I have had them on my 2007 MCS for about one week - I am still in the break-in period so have not driven them hard yet. New, they are sort of noisy, but I expect some of that noice to dissipate after a couple of hundred miles. They handle very well so far under my mild driving. The 215s on the 40mm offest wheels stick out a little bit contributing a nice "butch" look if you are into that.

I intend to use them EXCEPT in deep winter - so will switch to winter tires with the heavy northeast snows - which means mid-December to March 1. It can get down near freezing starting mid-October, and going until about April 1, so summer high performance are NOT good during this period if you drive a lot at night.

And since it can rain a lot in the spring/fall it makes sense to use the all-season - winter combo UNLESS you want to have three sets of tires/wheels - which is an awful lot of fiddling about. Plus we drive south occasionally in winter - so the all-seasons leave the Northeast at 20F and do ok a few days later in 80F.

I'm having the 912s installed on Dr Evil (the MCSC) tomorrow (paid $270 for four of them in size 205/45/17).

Report will be forthcoming in a few weeks.

912s

I put my wheel and tire combo on my R56 this afternoon. When I ordered from Edge Racing using the bundle option, tires were priced at $74.75 each for 205/50/16.

My wheels and tires came mounted, balanced, lugs, lug tool, nice chrome stem caps and pressured at 40 in each wheel.

I will let the collective know what I think of the 912s after Monday's Colorado weather passes through the area, we are supposed to get a light snow.

My brief drive this afternoon, the are much quieter than the Dunlop run-flats which are on my webbies.

my buddy got these on DR19's for his Subaru (215/45/17). He replaced stock wheels with ZIEX512's he bought last year (he does 30k+/yr). He said the 912's were smoother and had more grip...more precise steering.

I'll be getting my set on next week in the OEM 17" size for MINI

Put these on my Honda Accord. Got them from Discount Tire for $120 during their recent $100-off sale. Great tire so far, excellent match for the Honda. Great in the wet, quiet and good handling.

Sorry no info on the MINI. Got the Goodyear Eagle F1s All-Seasons for my MCS.

So how is everyone still liking the 912's? Is anybody beginning to experience any loud road noise from the tires? Something has gotten loud with me. Its either the tires or I am developing a wheel bearing issue. I have two autocrosses on these tires and 10,000 miles. They all have good tread remaining at about 6/32 - 7/32 left.

UPDATE: have been doing more research on what causes tire noise. My tires may have some feathering

from another forum:

I have been doing some more research and it may be the tires getting what is called feathering.

From some other forum

"b. Front tire roar is symptomatic of feathering. Feathered tires that are noisy at 45 MPH will also be noisy at 20 MPH. When coming to a stop they will “growl.” At 45 MPH they sound like “a washing machine on spin cycle.”"

Pretty much exactly what I am experiencing...

my original post from almost a year ago is a few posts up...i took them off for the summer so they currently only have 7,000 miles on them...

the noise i mentioned has disappeared, i think they have been great under normal driving...definitely "stickier" and better handling than the OE 195/55R16 summer tires (I have 215/50R16)...

they were definitely NOT adequate for winter driving here in MA...if the road was slippery, i was slipping and sliding all over the place (unlike my prior WRXes with winter sport tires)...

with the front wheel drive (vs. AWS) i just bought some Michelin X-Ices...

I only have about 8,000 on my 912's but no noise or feathering.
They are good but not great tires.

for $52 each for 195/60/15 from www.edgeeracing.com, they are fantastic tires. Coming up on around 400 miles on the new 912s and I've been very happy with them. I loved my 512s and these seem to be just as good. I've yet to put them thru any hard driving paces yet, but I'll get there with some autumn drives in the canyons.

My noise was a wheel bearing. It took a awhile to get loud enough to not suspect tires.

912's are basically wat you pay for. it's a mediocre tire for your
dailydriver. they feel better when over inflated by 3psi vs your
regular psi you would use on a high performance tire.

say i use GSD3's or SportMax at 35psi.
i would pump the 912's in excess of 38psi....otherwise they are
mush from my experience.

I just got a set of Konig Rewinds with 195/60/15 912s. I replaced my Dunlop runflats. I like them, so far I've found them to be quiet and very smooth.

Three of the four needed no balancing weights, the fourth one only 1/4 once. Never had that happen before. Rides much better than it did with the runflats also.

Total cost for wheels and tires from Discount Tire Direct......$696 shipped to my door.

I'd recommend them.

912 road experience after about 14K miles. You should rotate often. If you get feathering or outer edge wear, you will get road noise.

For the price my 912s have been very good, I have some fairly noticeable tire whine at high speeds due to not rotating as often as needed.

Rotate at 3k min and ensure your alignment is spot on.

I would buy another set for winter usage. They are not a UHP Summer tire, so don't expect that type of performance.

I have had these tires on the track for some fast laps, they work but do not inspire confidence like a UHP or dedicated track tire.
