Shot thru a mirror

I have taken a couple of pix thru the passenger and driver side mirrors. Is there a decent technique to this? I seem to have issues with focus. Here are some examples:
My wife in her MINI

The dog who thinks he owns the car

Advice is welcome... tho I don't take these shots often, they can be fun

That first one is cool I like it

it almost looks like you are in england with the driver on the left side.

Sorry, I can't help you with that as I'm no photography expert.

However, I'd just like to say that I'm glad you didn't post this in Off Topic. I would have been very worried about that thread title.

Glad you're okay and those are good shots, even though there are some minor focus issues.

Those are pretty decent shots - if there's a focus issue here, it's just a lack of depth of field from using a large aperature setting.

You didn't say what type of camera this is - how much control do you have over the camera?

The first one is perfect—more DOF would make it less interesting.

I'm guessing here, but the last 2 look like subtle camera shake (can't really tell without EXIF data)

If your camera has multi metering switch it to center weighted or spot metering so the auto focus will not try to grab the outside of the mirror or anything in front of it. If you zoom into the mirror this often occures anyway. Lighting is tough but that is mostly controled by the sun in shots like these so just pick a good time.Sidewalks-gwr-mirror.jpg I grabbed this one in low light so the DOF isn't great-I could have also moved to f4 to blur the backgorund but overall I was pretty happy with it.

Shake is your worst enemy.

Hope you aren't talking on the phone too when taking these. ;^)

Thanx. The first was taken on MTTS with my Canon Digital EOS using a manual focus. Tha last one is using my wife's point and shoot... thanx for the suggestion to use a weighted focus.

Actually I think your focusing, exsposure, etc is great. If anything I would suggest zooming out a bit so the mirror is used as a frame.
