OEM Speakers are JUNK. What size components for an upgrade?

Hey guys,

Ive had the car for nearly 1 week now, and have come to HATE HATE HATE HATE the oem audio on it. Ive had better sound come out of my rental aveo!

I really want to replace the speakers, but was wondering what size components the car takes?

Also, i noticed there are 2 speakers on each door. I assume 1 is for the tweeter (highs) the other for mids/lows. am i correct?

Did you get the uprated HI-FI? I did and was initially disappointed....now I know you are going to think I'm nuts, but if there is something to "breaking in" speakers, well it seems to me the speakers in my car are sounding better after use for 3 months and about 2700 miles. I can't afford this soon after buying the car to replace the speakers with higher end stuff (probably will eventually) but I think the bottom and mid frequencies seems to be much cleaner and less muddy sounding with time. Let the fun at my expense begin!

I agree- my s came with the stock plain jane radio - it is the worst going. I am looking for replacemet parts- equalizer, booster and speakers. The dealer was no help- even for purchasing the different parts to make an upgrade.

Did he really run power only to the rear speakers and sub? No front stage? That just doesn't make sense. You don't even need rear speakers in a car this sized.

It's a long thread. So, not sure which example you are talking about. Best to pose that question in the thread itself.

The fronts run off the amp/head unit just fine. They are only 3 or 4" speakers, it's not like 400 watt's is going to make them sound "bigger".

He's got a 3-way speaker set up front. If I had an amp, I'd run the fronts off the amp with the subs using the other 2 channels and then use the stock amp for the rear fill.
Looks like he did it right later in that thread.

Talking about the OP in this thread where he said he ran 2 channels to the 6x9 and 2 channels to the sub.

ahh ok.. my memory isn't long enough to go all the way back to the beginning of the thread =P

While he didn't put his aftermarket amp to the fronts, he did replace the front speakers and had the stock amp powering them.

Personally I would have let the 6x9s be powered off the stock amp and the fronts and sub off the aftermarket amps - oh wait - that exactly what I did.

The fronts AM speakers did get pretty loud before I hooked up the AM amp to them though.
