Towing a classic behind an 05 MCSC

Any suggestions on flat-towing a classic Mini (about 1500 pounds or so) behind an MCSC? I really like the MDM kit, but it is limited to 1000 pounds. Guess if my classic didn't have the engine, that might work. I have the BlueFlame exhaust, so don't have the center exit of the typical S. Any thoughts?

Hi 2phun,

MINI of Pittsburgh (who I just ordered my R56 MC from - woohoo!) has a classic Mini that they tow to various events... I'm pretty sure they use a TowLink from Mini-Fini. According to the Mini-Fini website, that setup should be good for up to 1400 pounds - still not your 1500-lb target, but closer anyway!

Now that I think of it, though, MoP's is sans engine.

Maybe someone from MoP will see this thread and chime in...

Hope that helps!

Irregardless of what the tow bar can handle, 1500 pounds sounds like more than the MINI drivetrain is really up to safely handling. That's a lot of weight for a 4 cylinder engine. Just my 2 cents.

I don't remember where I read or saw it but I believe the recommended towing limit is 900 lbs.

Just got this response back from Brent at MiniDoMore...
Steve, that would be about the limit of what I would tow. The MINI in Great
Britain is rated at 1440 lbs. With our hitch you will be able to tow this.

No reason that US cars should be able to pull less than UK cars, other than reducing liability for MINIUSA. So looks like this is a possibility, and I definitely like the look of the hidden hitch.

It's never a good idea to tow what the maximum capability of a vehicle is. For instance my other car has a max capability of 7,000 lbs. But it has a factory towing package designed to help it pull 7,000 lbs. I still would not pull 7,000 lbs because it is the max load. You are on the limits for it's mechanical capabilites and over the limit in an emergancy handling situation. You are asking for trouble, mechanically and saftey wise trying to pull a max load with a car that was not designed to pull in the first place, your MINI.

Jim your right. We do have a Classic Mini that we do tow to events. We use the TowLink kit From Mini Fini. Also Our Grille car has no motor or trans, just a Weber Grille.

Thanks

There's a fellow from the Dayton Ohio area that pulls a classic behind his MCS. He uses a home made light weight car dolly. My guess is that his dolly has brakes on it, although I don't know for sure.

Yeah - I know he's towed his classic several times with a MCS... I have no idea how heavy the dolly is though.

Talk to him about it at the Dayton BCD coming up. Also talk to Tim Bosse, his next door neighbor. Tim also has a 2-wheel dolly to trailer his Clubman [white with the Brit flag on top and inside]. He made his and Paul's, as well as at least one other for another MINI owner from MI.
