Does a factory JCW car call for special insurance rates or coverage?

When you get a quote for insurance, do the insurance companies classify or categorize a Mini with JCW as a unique class of Mini?

I assumed that my agent would ask me "which model" when I told her I wanted a quote, and that there'd be a JCW category, given the very different performance characteristics as compared to the normal S model. But that doesn't appear to be the case. (In this instance, it's for a Mini S Convertible with JCW.)

What has your experience been? No difference, insurance-wise?

Thanks in advance.

Just say "Cooper S". My insurance didn't even care if it was the regular MC or the MCS. Nice and cheap.

you could call a couple of different insurers. tell them you are thinking about buying an S or JCW and would like to know if they insure the same. this is something I often do before buying a another and/or new vehicle. It is part of the cost equation

I got all the JCW stuff long after purchasing the car and setting up insurance. They think it's a regular MCS.

The thing I wonder about is the comprehensive coverage. I actually am planning to talk to my agent about my insurance coverages (house and car) soon, and I'm curious about whether I need to "claim" the JCW for replacement cost. After all, if someone crashed into me and the car was totalled, I've got close to $10,000 (with labor) of "options" that I'd like to be included in any replacement cost.

I was thinking the same thing but only about my car apart from my parents they paid my Mini but I bought the JCW with my money and it was about $6,200 and what if someone hit me and it was a total loss then what about the money I spent it would go down the drain

That's exactly what I'm wondering. It might cost a little more to add "specified special equipment" (for theft or damage coverage) to the policy, but I don't know if they will then say, "Hey, that's all performance stuff."

So will I, I'm going to go to my agent tomorrow (see what you made me do I'm just so curious) most likely they'll say "oh you need this policy it's just a couple hundred more than what you got right now."

GEICO asked if my new car was modified and after thinking about it

I could have said no, but what if the engine were damaged and the jcw found there and needed replacement. I said yes and it costs more.

I don't think my company has a different rate for the MC or MCS as either. Just cheap. It was not too much more than I was paying to insure my 10 year old Jeep.

they treat it like any other option, they know the value of your car, and they know that its a cooper S. Whether or not its got 6k worht of options in stereo/nav/interior upgrades, or the JCW package, they don't care. Its not sold in large enough numbers to be insured as a seperate model, at least thats my take. Ours is insured as a Mini Cooper S.

In general, when you insure the car you tell them how much it costs. If you bought the car with the stuff installed, it was all good.

If you add stuff ... you need to read the fine print in your policy. Companies may differ. They most likely are not going to cover that stuff unless you pay them more money

with insurance companies, they only differ the MINI by two models i think. i'm not sure if the GP comes up as a different car. but that would be a different story.

as for possibly losing money with the jcw if something were to happen. the insurance companies will give you blue book value of your car if something were to happen. if you look at NADA or Kelley Blue Book, they both have JCW as an option for the pricing. So you would not lose out on those things.

my insurance just wanted to know if it was an S model. no jcw option. all my insurance was done online. and i think it would be that way with most insurance companies.

so you should be fine.

You'd better claim any mods!

100% wrong.

You will never see a dime of the JCW parts and labor if you don't claim them. JCW is considered an aftermarket part. It would not be covered in the event of an accident, at least in MA, NH, RI, CT, ME, VA, GA, FL, TN, SC, NC, NJ, NY, PA... But those are the only states handled out of my office. So I can't speak for all states. (100% of the above, you get bubkus)

I do have to laugh about the "different performance" of a JCW vs. a regular S..... heehe.... my "normal S" and quite a few others are easily as fast or faster than JCW cars.

And that gets to my point... no matter where you get it, it's still an aftermarket upgrade. I knew that if anything happened to my car I would get the value of the base car and then have to salvage the parts I could to use again or sell.

I did have someone tell me once that he insured his upgrades on his car. I don't know exactly how it was done but it did cost extra... and this car had far more extra money in it than any of our MINIs.... $25K+ easily. I do not know how he worked it out if it was on his car insurance or a separate policy but anyways.... it was totalled in a freak accident and he got paid.

I'm sure it varies from company to company and state to state, most things in insurance do. It may be as easy as a phone call and a few extra dollars a month to cover your parts.

You have to read your policy. Some will give you riders for aftermarket parts and that includes ... TIRES (nm wheels, stereos, etc.)
