Shake, rattle and roll
Shake, rattle and roll
God help me if "roll" ever becomes a problem while videotaping in the MINI.
Ok, I was out playing around last night with some new gear. A CruiseCam headrest mount arrived, and I picked up a Canon ZR-700 MiniDV camera last week. I went out for a short drive last night just to see how the pieces fit together. By and large, I'm happy, but I have two things that are bugging me.
1) The camera rattles a little bit. You can hear the innards wiggle when you shake the camera, and it sounds much like the tape does when you shake it. Except I took the tape out. And removed the battery. And the noise is still there. I don't care much about that, except that the noise finds its way to the microphone when taping. I haven't verified with 100% certainty that this is the source, but there is a very noticeable rattling noise showing up on the video.
2) The mounting is rock-solid, but this means that even small bumps show up when watching the video on a TV. It's still there when watching the LCD on the camera, but it's really magnified on the bigger screen (thank you Cap'n Obvious).
Has anyone else experienced similar problems and found solutions to them? I'm going to swing by one of the big box stores tonight and shake some cameras to see if the problem's more isolated to my camera, and if so return it if I can't find a solution.

off camera mic in the engine bay should rectify that and provide you with a nice soundtrack
As faras the bouncing goes I made a custome mount had the same issue eliminated it as far as stills go am yet to try with the vid cam again. basically you'll get every bump in the road with a stiff suspension and high PSI or RF tires, rock solid means that bounce is limited to one not 20 bounces for every bump in the road you tavel over. of course if we moved south the roads would be in much better shape LOL

Off-camera mic with these low-end camcorders is difficult if not impossible. :-(
Here's a video clip I took just driving home from work yesterday (this will probably come down tomorrow, so look soon!) I returned the camera today to B&H and ordered a Sony DCR-HC96 from Amazon. Hopefully that won't suffer the same problem. I took the video with IS disabled; turning it on should hopefully reduce the bounce.
