If you already own good canon glass (L series lenses for example) it makes not much sense to switch to a different camera system now.
If you someone owns a small number of cheap or older non-autofocus lenses, then honestly I think it makes sense to look at both modern D-SLR platforms and the good glass that is available and then decide.

Many of the Canon speedlights can be used to trigger other flashes. Or for a completely off camera set up you can use the ST-E2 transmitter.

Nikon has always kicked Canon's butt on lighting, but the cost of entry is a bit less prohibitive than what you may have thought.
Ergonomics is a such a personal thing. When I decided to get more serious about photography, I faced this debate since Pentax was (even by then) a non-player in the autofocus world.
The rear jog dial and the overall ergonomics of the EOS-5/A2 beat out Nikon's offerings by a big stretch. And it's been so much money on glass since. . .
Point is: People need to go play with the gear to see how it fits their hands and shooting experience.
Happy shooting.

Thanks guys

Thanks guys

I blame the photo forum for twisting my rubber arm into getting the 70-200 F/2.8 VR.

While that 8mp point & shoot may have 2mp more those pixels are on a much smaller sensor. What that gives you is a nosier picture, especially at a higher ISO. I had a Nikon D2H 4 mp & to my eyes it took better pictures than my Fuji S1 or D70, but not my D200. As far as point & shoots go large pixel counts is pure marketing.
Another point is the lens on the camera. Even the cheapest glass on a DSLR is going to be much better that any on a Point & shoot.

In due time gentlemen, in due time....
The model was a little shy, as while I was taking those shots, there was a crowd of about 50 people gathered, some making fun of her poses, some drooling down their chin, so she is a little apprehensive on allowing me to release them to the general public... but maybe NAM doesnt count as general public....

Edit: Sorry I missed the second page, thanks for also pointing it out, trick.
And as I've said before, dave, it's your amazing flash trickery that truly sets your photos apart and makes them the best around!
