I've tried, but the html code for it is too large for NAM - even stripped down to one phote with no borders and color....

You can't, because you can't just insert HTML code, only UBB code. You can embed specific flickr thumbnails, though...but there's no easy way to randomize that. Like this:

I can envision how to make a UBB / flickr signature generator thingy. The catch would be that it would need someplace to host a cgi. To over-simplify things, you'd need one URL that would always give you the thumbnail of your most recent flickr upload... and to keep UBB happy, that url would probably have to end in .jpg even though it would be running some flickr api code to grab (or maybe redirect to) the real image file.

Too bad I don't have someplace to host cgi stuff...

I was afraid you'd say that.

If I can get php (5) figured out on my mac, I'll see if I can whip something up.

This *may* help:

http://photomatt.net/scripts/randomimage

I wrote my own asp script to do something similar, but has to be run on a windoze server. And it only returns a path, not the image content:

Well, I came up with something that worked for me locally, and now it's time to see if Josh can get it to work when he hosts it...

It's not yet perfect, but it works! I'm currently bouncing against the 300 character limit for signatures... I wanted to do my latest 5 images, but that pushed the sig over 300 characters.

Since Josh is paying for the hosting, I'll wait for his reaction before I spill the beans.

Good work!

Are the 300 characters limited by the funky naming scheme that Flickr uses?

Nope. I'm not using flickr URLs - but still, getting 5 urls into 300 characters is a little tight...

The reason for using URLs other than the flickr ones is that I can keep my sig the same, and when I upload new pictures, they'll magically show up in my sig (I hope).

I just uploaded a picture of my MINI in a parking garage as a test. Before, my sig was 4 black and white pictures, now it should be the MINI and 3 black and whites... fingers crossed.

Yay!

Right now, it does ordered pictures, I could do random too, though.

Pretty sweet. How about making the images links to their Flickr pages?

What did I start!? All this talk of PHP and HTML and URL and WTFL have me totally confused in a sea of uknown termanology! ;-)

Great work though! I have the thumbnails loaded in my sig, but they wouldn't update or link to flickr.

I'm working on it. When things are good, I'll explain how other people can have their sig display flickr uploads. The big problem is the length limitation on sigs here on NAM - it will make it hard to do too much.

When it is figured out, the instructions will be nice and simple, don't worry. All you'll have to do is cut and paste some stuff into your sig here on NAM, and do a tiny bit of customizing - like specifying your flickr userid...

I tried using the same idea over on that other mini forum, and it doesn't work there... it will only recognize something as an image if the URL has .jpg :(

I'll try to keep the uber-geek talk off this thread, but I'll let you know when things are good to go.

hahahah, I was just joking with you, thanks for putting some effort into this! I've seen this on people's blogs and just thought it would be great in our signatures!

Switching gears a bit, I found a disc with some pictures from last summers grand opening of the Italian Job Stunt Coaster at PKI in Ohio. I just uploaded them to Flickr and you can follow our journey from MN here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/grizzly...n/set-1140090/

I wrote up some instructions for the flickrSig thing... it might still change a bit, and there's a chance Josh could not like all the traffic on the host he's paying for and tell me to turn the thing off.

But, for now, the details are over here:

Sorry I had a crazy week and didn't have a chance to get back to NAM. Go right ahead. I should have a ton of bandwidth, if it gets crazy I'll let you know but I doubt it.

I've found posting linked Flickr images in vBulletin to be rather tedious, so I whacked together a Flickr to vBulletin bookmarklet that will do the hard work of generating the requisite vB code for you. Click the link for more info.

Good job!! Works perfectly! Took me a little bit to understand how to use it. Thanks for the info on dragging that link to my IE tool bar. Just gotta make sure that you're focused on a single Flickr image--not a whole page of them before using the link. To me thats one of the slowest part of Flickr---trying to navigate to the image I want, then finding the URL code for it.

I have another idea on how to generate a page of images and that's using the Flickr RSS feed to open up a new page of the images tagged using vB code--that what it shows all the images on a page---and you can COPY/Paste them as needed. I'm not sure if you can specify how many images to pull from the feed, but it's an idea I want to pursue.

I flickr! Just joined the miniacs group. Most of my photos are food related though. I do have a MINI set. Probably should add more photos to it! http://flickr.com/photos/foodchronicles/

I also use a cool tool to manipulate photos at: http://flagrantdisregard.com/flickr/
