Video Camera Set Up for Track Days
Video Camera Set Up for Track Days
Track days are incredibly exhilerating and fun in a Cooper S!
I'd like to capture the time racing around the track but don't have a video camera or a mount.
What do you recommend for a video camera? mounting system?
Thanks for your help! With luck, I'll have a system in place before the BMW CCA Oktoberfest in mid-September and will share the results.
Pete
2002 MCS (turning 75,000 this week)
R/W, Moss rally lights and bar, special side stripes
BMP air filter, Orciari hood scoops, Alta 15% reduction pulley, Alta intercooler cover, Conforti ECU reprogram - 93 octane, slotted/dimpled rotors, Goodrich braided steel brake lines, (very dirty) Mintex pads in front / Ferodo in rear, Borla exhaust, Kozei wheels with Yokohama AVS tires
H-Sport sway bars (front and rear) to be installed this weekend
Now if only the driver was up to the mods ~ but I'm learning!

Dredging up an old thread here....
Since the Vacu-cam is no longer available from Richard and I'd rather not spend the grand that a Chase Cam setup costs what are people using.
Technology has advanced the past few years and I see there are cameras such as the Flip for as low as 150 bucks. I don't intend on mounting to the roll bar as I don't want the classic rear view mirror shot. I'd much rather place the camera in or around the windshield area. I was looking at the flip figuring I could use a few rubber bands to secure it to the rear view mirror.
Basically looking for a solution that will give me decent quality for at most a few hundred dollars.

Do you alreay have a camera?
If not, I have a Go Pro that I only used once that I would sell well within your budget, PM if interested. It has all sorts of mounting brackets and suction cups etc. Quite a few people use them as race cams, I bought two but decided I only need one.

That's a GoPro camera Like I have. That's a great mount too, although I only get about 60 min on a 2 gig card. Anybody know what thread size goes in the tow hook hole?
Try searching some, but last I remember reading it was a non-standard BMW made thread size/pattern.
I use CrusieCam's mount. (Pics is from their web site www.cruisecam.com)

About $45 and works well. Quickly mounts to the headrest post. For a Video Camera, I bought a Sony Handycam that uses miniDV tapes. It was new but a return on on the clearence table at Circuit City. I paid $125 for the camera
For a link to a video I did with this set-up that I put on YouTube

Actually he just cut and tapped a hole on the standard MINI tow hook to attach a custom bracket. His design inspired me to get one and do the same. The footage is much better when the camera is lower to the ground, especially with the GoPro's wide viewing angle.

What kind of resolution does this get?

512x384 video. 5 megapixel stills on the new "wide angle" version I have. 3 megapixel on his standard version. Uses 2GB SD cards. Waterproof housing. Lots of mounting options and kits.

I made one like this years ago and it worked very well. Good design and good product (friend uses one in his M). You want something solid when its in the car in the case of an accident you dont want a camera pummeling you.

How does this resolution look on a 1080P LCD TV when burned to a DVD (1080 up-convert DVD player)?
Depends on how big your TV is.
This appears to be the same thing, but it comes with a stick on mount and is only 150!

Otherwise they have other alternatives.

I've done it, I just found the angle boring and didn't like the implied safety risks of the fact that if used on the street for a MINI run there was a camera with a metal bar attached to the car in a place that myself and my passenger could hit there head on if moved around during some sort of collision.
But to make one it's about a total of $10 or less and you'll likely have enough spare raw materials left over that you could make another mouth for elsewhere if so desired.
