Playing Tour Guide (pics)

My folks are in town this weekend so I'm playing tour guide. Since they have been out to Los Angeles before a few times, I'm trying to mix things up a bit.

First up, the Huntington Library and Gardens near Pasadena. These shots are from the Japanese garden, but they also have about half a dozen other types of gardens there, plus gallaries.

Next, was a trip to the Wild Animal Park (tickets are $10 cheaper if you print them at home and bring them with you.

Cool.
Tell me about that first pic. (aperture, shutter speed, metering, etc.) Did you use the kit lens or your VR? I like the DoF on that one.

To me, the zebra pic works with the washed out sky 'cause of the black and white stripes.

That last pic though . . . he, he! Little guy's been a bit to domesticated I see.

You might also take your parents to The Getty and then Will Rogers State Park.

Nikon D70 with Nikon 70-200 F/2.8 VR
Aperture: F/3.5
Shutter: 1/4000
ISO: 200
Focal Length: 125mm

I shot it aperture priority while underexposing 2/3 stop

In the original shot the sky is more blue, but the zebra is underexposed, once that was corrected the sky was washed out, but I think it looks a lot better that way too.

Yeah, they are a little too "successful" with breeding in captivity it would appear.

Great photos again, David.
I'll be heading out to chicago for the weekend, looking forward to taking thousands of photos of the city and airshow, as I had done before but never with an slr or a good lens. I can't wait.
But you just reminded me to take advantage of the animals in the zoo as well.
(No I didn't mean it that way!! )

Dave,

I have a quick Photoshop CS question for you. How do you add the copyright information to the bottom of the photos like you did? Do you create another layer and do it in there? I can't figure it out. Any help you could proovide would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to post some of my shots from Italy but I want that copyright information underneath each one.

Thanks,

Jason

Jason,

Step 1: Image / Canvas Size / 20 Pixels and then click the 9 square box at the top center so the image grows straight down.

(now you have the image with a black background 20 pixels wide at the bottome of the image)

Step 2: click on the text tool, and type in your text including the copyright information.

Step 2.1: I have the Image Resize, unsharp Mask, canvas growth down, copyright text saved as a photoshop action so I can whip that off quickly on each photo.

Step 3: save as a psd file (adding text causes a second layer to be created)

Step 4: save for web and then select the amount of jpeg compression you want to produce a given file size (I usuallly shoot for 150kb to 170 kb for an 800 pixel wide image).

Hope that helps!

Dave

Dave,

Since this is an impromptu PS tutorial. What are your unsharp mask settings:

amount?
radius?
threshold?

Thanks.

Thanks so much Dave for the PS tips. I will try to get these pictures done and posted today.

One more thing, what key sequence do you use to get the copyright symbol to show?

Thanks Clover. I'm trying to do a bit more non-car related photography, so this was a good outing for me. My folks are back in Colorado now, but they had a great time out here and enjoyed the nice weather.

All of the zoo photos were shot with my 70-200 F/2.8 used in conjunction with my Nikon TC-17 EII 1.7x teleconverter. At the long end it's 340mm.

My favorite source for the Copyright tag and format is
http://www.yahoo.com

Scroll to the bottom--copy and paste their copyright tag, and change Yahoo! to your first and last name or company name.

Of course if you're already on NAM, that's also available at the lower left corner as well, I just have Yahoo set as my browser home page.
