Testing my new camera

I picked up a Samsung Digimax v70. Takes good night shots. Tell me what you think.

Was that handheld or tripod mounted? Looks a bit soft to me, like it was hand held. Not bad though. Or maybe focus wasn't set right. The Red MINI is what I'm looking at mostly.

I like it. It almost looks like a painting rather than a photo.

It was on a tripod that's older than the dirt. I need to get a new one. I used a 15 Sec exposure.

Unless the camera was shaking as you shot it, I don't think it's a tripod issue. Was this set to Autofocus? Autofocus always has problems in dim light. One suggestion that DiD made earlier was to use a flashlight to illuminate the focus point--set focus, then turn the light off. This "might" affect exposure though, so you have to test.

For being a test nightshot, it's a pretty good one.
Backlit pics are always wild beasts in need of domestication, more so when they're nocturnal.

The flashlight method works best if you shoot manual mode. That way you're setting the aperture and the exposure time.

I have found the flashlight method works nicely on a D-SLR if you have your lens se to autofocus, then get your picture focused with the aid of the flashlight, then turn your lens to manual focus (since it is now focused), and then shoot manual mode to take the pictured.

With the lens set to manual focus after you used autofocus to set the focus point, the camera won't try to "reset" the focus point when you take the photo.

I haven't tried this with a P&S, but I imagine the flashlight method could help you find the focus point, but you may need to depress the shutter release half way down then turn off the flashlight.

Just a few thoughts.

Here is a close up I just took indoor with very poor light. The camera is Nikon Coolpix 8800.

I was looking into that camera before I bought this one. Costco had a great price on the Coolpix. But it uses Compact Flash and I already had a 256 MB SD flash card. Although fot the money I would save I could get a 1Gig compact Flash.

Maybe I will look further into that.

Well, depending on the quality of CF card, I have seen them as low as $60 for 1Gb at local Fry's. There are some 2Gb out there for about $120, but they are a little slower. I chose to buy the faster 1GB cards as I tend to take pictures at the highest available size/quality wich results in about a 25mb file. Of course I end up editing them down to a more managable size as most of my stuff is done for the web. But over all I am very happy with the camera. For me it was an upgrade from my old 1.1mb Fuji from some years ago (it was top of the line then ). But compared to the price of the camera, the cost of the card was insignificant.

A small portion of the previous picture. Taken from the original tiff file and slightly Photoshoped and blown up (obviousely).

Nice pics - now you need to learn about Sharpening Hit some forums and do some research...I strongly recommend getting the Photokit set of plugins.

I appreciate the tip. However, I was just doing this to demonstrate the camera's ability, which way exceeds my own. I have no delusions about my photography skills (or lack there of  ). This was an impromptu shot. The camera settings were off, the lighting was poor, etc. And of course the Photoshop editing was very minimal.

That being said, you are right. Needs work.

True, true!
Did you think about the backlighting issue?
Also, you might try straying from strong geometry (lines, rectangles, etc.) right behind the MINIs, unless it adds to the story you wish to portray.
I'm sure you've seen Dave's nightshots. What makes them work so well are the uncluttered backgrounds.

The more I look at your pic, the more I see a toy MINI in the display window behind the Chili Red. It's just my imagination running away.

It does kind of look like a couple of models in a nice display.

Remember that this was the first night shot I ever took so it is in no way professional quality. For my next shot I will be looking for some great color contrast that I can use with it. And now that I know how to adjust certain things on the camers the next shots will be a lot different.
