JCW Spoiler Install

JCW Spoiler Install
I bought the JCW spoiler from Morristown MINI. I didn't want to spend the extra $60+ for the glue kit so decided to experiment. I drilled two small holes through the spoiler base just where the base blends into the braces that attach the spoiler to the base. I used the supplied template and attached it to the hatch. I removed the third brake light and made sure that the wiring harness for this and the heated rear window was well out of the way. I positioned the spoiler onto the car using the template and attached it using masking tape.
Now I carefully spot drilled down through the holes in the spoiler to mark where to drill through the hatch. I removed the spoiler and drilled two clearance holes for the screws.
I put plenty of 100% silicone on the base of the spoiler and positioned it on the car. I then inserted button head Torx screws through the holes and by going into opening where the third brake light goes, I was able to attach nuts and secure the spoiler.
After cleaning off any excess silicone and reinstalling the brake light the job was done. It only took about ten minutes to install the spoiler but took an hour to get the old one off using fishing line to "saw" through the double sided tape.
I don't know why MINI decided to glue this thing on. All they had to do was make it with two studs molded into the base (like the OEM spoiler) and provide a drilling template.
If anyone wants to see what it looks like I can take a photo and post.

I remember seeing the installation PDF for this wing a while back on Gabe's MF and the gluing step would make me VERY nervous. The illustration uses a drawing depicting a "keen eye" as the sure fire method for getting the spoiler on straight. You better, cause once that glue dries (rather quickly if I recall), there's no turning back. I'll bet if it's not just right, your cool spoiler could rather quickly look rather schoolboy ricey.

The spoiler mounts on the hatch and not the roof and there are already holes drilled in there for the standard OEM spoiler. In fact they include plastic covers to attach over these when you install the JCW spoiler. So I don't see any problems. The glue on method instructions look pretty scary i.e. "don't get the glue anywhere on the paint as it's impossible to get off"; "make sure the spoiler is lined up before pressing into place as it's impossible to move later" etc. etc. If you read the instructions you will see what I mean.
What I'm saying is that the standard OEM spoiler is bolted on and with double sided tape so I don't see why they didn't follow the same theme. I guess they have their reasons.

I can't access the article on line but I assume it's the same as the official guide (i.e. glued on). I downloaded the instructions which is why I went with my method.
