JCW chose to sell the 18" wheels.

They could have chosen to do some real sweet 16x7.5" lightweight rims, and didn't. Sure the brake system works well, but it weighs tons more than TCE's Willwood kit. While the works stuff does add some benefit, the price points are such that for many, they just aren't cost competitive.

I'm happy that there are people who buy the works stuff, that's all fine and good. But arguments based on cost effectivness just don't justify the purchase. Other reasons (warranty, getting it rolled into the purchase price for financing etc) have to be brought in to justify the purchase. That's the point of the article.

JCW brought this on themselves by their pricing, not their products.

The first search will end up again being subjective NOT objective. The second is why I asked who and where did the original mapping come from, was it always BMW/MINI or did it originate with Daimler Benz? Wouldn't be the first time two technologies that originated in different places had a hard time communicating with each other. Was it Benz who started the FI and then BMW decides to troubleshoot it? Or has it always been BMW's technology? Who knows this?
I get ya - but here's the deal - regardless of who the original map came from, they've had 5 model years to perfect it and they are still having problems.

Along comes several aftermarket tuners who can smooth out most of the problems - what gives?

And some just made things worse...

I'm thinking v39 upgrades for all the CA cars based on emissions recall.

While being skeptical about the number of people who've had issues is a good thing, there are enough reports to know that the problems are real. Or did they just make 40+ versions of the ECU software for the fun of it?

That might be explained by the EPA regs they have to work under. Aftermarkets generally ignore those.

I don't think you need to apologize for having an honest reaction and submitting it.

Here is Bimmer's email if you are still upset with their opinion:

A 2006 Ferrari 430 costs about $200,000 US while a 2006 Corvette Z06 costs about $80,000. If I had the money, the Ferrari would be sitting in my garage.

Beyond basic transportation, form and content decisions are completly personal, and sometimes irrational.

I like the Mini because it performs beyond its 'cute' stature and surprises many. The complete JCW car will no doubt carry on. On the other hand, at 40K there are other alternatives and the EVO is one. The EVO's appearance, unfortunately, suffers from the basic transportation look on steroids. Sometimes I prefer to wear something other than a tight T-shirt...

What JCW has brought upon themselves by their pricing and their negotiated relationship with MINI are some huge $$$, and this is likely to continue with the next generation cars. I don't think they're too worried about one review in a small-circulation magazine for BMW owners.

Ha, no they are definitely NOT worried about it. Some owners though...
