JCW air box - How programming and encoding engine control unit ECU?
Hello everyone, I have a 2004 Mini Cooper R53 S and I recently purchased a JCW air box. I have all the necessary components and they have been installed, but I'm having trouble programming the air box in my MINI. I'm not familiar with this process, and my mechanic is also inexperienced with Mini and doesn't fully understand the instructions.
Can anyone please help me with the following:
- Where can I find instructions on how to program the air box using specific software?
- Where can I download this software?
- Is there a complete instruction manual available with pictures or videos?
Thank you in advance for your help in locating these instructions.

Unless your 2004 R53 is "relatively" performance modded, no need for ECU tuning simply to use the factory JCW airbox. Like many here and worldwide, I installed one on my own R53 (which is modded) and with the RPM-activated cowl intake port "de-flapped". Your pic doesn't show the unique JCW cowl partition which mates with that intake port for significantly increased flow. Did you install that? If so, you could consider removing the flap (easily reversible) and not utilize the components which trigger the flap to open. If yours has the equivalent of the JCW Tuning Kit (or more), you could contact forum member adriancl in Romania to perform a custom remote tune to suit various objectives, as lots of forum members here and in Europe have done successfully. Do a forum search with keywords "adriancl" and/or "remote tune" for specifics.

All the components from the instruction the mechanic installed them. However, when he reached step number 4, he encountered difficulties. As I understand it from the instructions, it is necessary to replace the part number in the programming ECU so that the new airbox works correctly at 4500 rpm. I don't want to remove the flap, I would like it to open as stated in the instructions. Do I need to adjust the programming ECU for this, or am I misunderstanding something?
P.S. I only have the JCW airbox, JCW exhaust system, and bumper from the JCW kit. I just wanted to finish setting up this airbox according to the instructions without any complicated modifications.

I haven’t messed with one before, so grain of salt. But, I believe the coding is a remap for the bigger injectors. I want to say that I’ve read that the airbox will function without the remap.

First off, had to remove your posted text format which was unreadable in reverse format. Unsure if you did that purposely...
The factory JCW airbox assy along with RPM-related trigger controls to open the auxiliary cowl intake port requires an electrical harness that mine lacks and possibly yours too since it wasn't dealer-fitted with the JCW Tuning Kit at some point. In any case, I had no interest in having that 2nd port open only at certain RPMs (more than likely, a "noise" control aspect required in many world markets - certainly so in North America).
You didn't indicate whether your install included the JCW-specific "partition" which replaces the S-spec partition and mates between the JCW airbox top cover (part "X") and gasket ("7") in the diagram link below. If not, your airbox will not draw fresh air from the windshield area with primary intent of this airbox thus defeated. I don't have the OEM P/N for that partition handy, however last I checked that item as well as the gasket are still available at not much $$. Unless your objective is to replicate 100% OEM JCW spec with all electrical trigger controls functioning, I'd suggest doing as most of us have by "de-flapping" for 100% fresh air draw from the cowl. By your stated intent, that would be the least complicated solution with no programming required.
The instructions you posted are for the upgrade kit from the early 200hp JCW kit to the later 210hp JCW kit. The airbox flap is controlled by a module and should function as designed when step 3 is completed. The module part number is 13717557876 and a pic can be seen in post #7 of this thread: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...i-r52-r53.html
Step 4 is to program the ECU with the 210hp JCW tune using the 380cc injectors, not to control the airbox. What is really strange about the instructions you’re using is they never mention or show the control module, but I believe the connection for it to the ECU is included in the step 3 wiring.
Are you sure you received all of the wiring harnesses, control module, and vacuum lines and parts with your JCW airbox?
