I'm pretty new to the world of minis and ran across a 2016 mini today that I'm confused by. It has S badging but looks to be a JCW. Did they build the S with JCW options?

Yes, you could option an S model with JCW appearance items. There was also an optional JCW tuning kit with exhaust and ECU update.

The JCW get a higher performance engine tune, better engine temperature control and oil coolers, and full big brake kit. Those are the big ticket items that the S wouldn't have.

 

If I'm understanding this right, it would have some of the looks and the motor but not the go fast(er) parts/tune.

 

Its an XP73, that is the code for an F56S.
A full on JCW is an XM96
Its missing the B48 engine and JCW tune.
Extra cooling.
Beefier suspension.
Larger diameter exhaust (2.75")
JCW big brake kit.

Basically its missing the JCW powertrain, brakes and suspension.

Ironically, mine is an S, with JCW interior!!!
