Rubbery shifting

I have a '17 F56 JCW with the manual trans. Whenever I am shifting it feels like I am pulling the shifter through a bunch of rubber right before it goes into gear. It is very spongy and does not shift cleanly at all. Is this just the nature of the trans in this car or is something wrong? Is there a way to improve this and make it more notchy or less rubbery? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Hey Mike. I'm comparing this to the Aisin AY6 in the 2013 Camaro that I had a few years ago. That transmission was known as a terrible tranny but the shift feel of it felt much better to that of my Mini.

That's a funny coincidence, my Copper replaced a 2014 Camaro SS with the same 6sp transmission. I don't remember the Mini shifting feeling soft or rubbery compared to the Camaro.
I don't know, rear drive cars manual might feel more direct i.e. linkage/line loss?
Rant: at the time I was thinking of getting a 1LE as my SS had so much nose dive it made me nauseous but I got such a kick out of the Mini on the test drive that I quickly went back to grab it.
