Oil catch can?

I’d like to hear people’s opinions about this product:

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-part...779ecs05a02~a/

Legit concern and solution — or paranoia gone mad?

I’d think this sort of thing would be of particular interest to those who are using add-on modules that add 3-5 PSI of boost.

1. on a stock car its worth investment
2. you can buy 4 Oil Catch cans off ebay for that price.. all of which have working baffles and function the same (just no gimmick branding)

If you run any sort of ECU flash or module that lowers/adjusts coolant temp.. then youre likely not vaping/atomizing as much oil and an OCC is pretty much worthless; unless you like to look at whats collecting in it.. You can collect; oil, water, fuel.. these can be indicators of issues within the engine..but the catch can isnt preventing them.

*before someone flames me for my opinion:
-whats your average coolant temp? Mine is ~177f..
-how much oil do you burn/consume between oil changes? I change at 4k and consume nothing..
-what boost you run? 21.5psi here..
-what do you collect in your OCC? I get..nothing (before mods, and thermostat adjustment I would though .. )

I've been running this $35 one for maybe two years now on another vehicle. It has worked incredibly well. Highly recommend, but just use better hose.

However you dont have a N14 engine. From what I gather, the newer cars seem to benefit just about zero from a OCC.

It's a great design and "Engineered and manufactured in the USA". Some people tap between the valve cover and the return line going into the turbo or the line going off the back side of the valve cover into the intake manifold. This was on the N14/N18 engines that seem to have a higher amount of vaporized oil on the PCV system.

I have not seen a person yet with a catch can on the B38/B48/B36/B46 system. This system seems to have a better PCV system than the older engines, maybe that will change as the engine gets older and the PCV system gets some age.

This is what I thought too, it more of a show mod than anything with newer cars

Its funny, I pull SO MUCH from my 07 Toyota FJ. Just a big slow lug of a 4.0L. Must be the snorkel and moisture or something. You'd think this thing wouldnt need one, and in reality it likely doesnt. Would just burn it off.

I did have my N18 R60 intake pipe off this weekend and there was oil in it...but I assume not enough to hurt anything. Lubing up that Turbo lol

My various subaru builds always needed them. These newer mini engines are very efficient and I just dont think its needed

Interesting thoughts. I have a 2011 R56 with the N18 engine. I just today received an oil catch can from Amazon that looks strikingly similar to the one linked to on e-bay above (for pretty much the same price). I've watched a video or two on installing them, but I have some questions. Does anyone know what size (diameter) that little hose is from the PCV valve to the intake? Do you know if I can get those fittings on the ends of that hose? I think I'd rather get new ones to use with the catch can. That way if it's not really doing anything I can put the original hose back on without having to swap the ends. I definitely don't want to cannibalize the existing hose by cutting it in half and connecting it to others going to/from the catch can with adapters and hose clamps. I think that would look a little like a hack.

Seems like the favored spot to install it is on that tab back by the intake box. It certainly seems made for this purpose, but is there an alternate spot?

Any pictures of exiting installs greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!!

I have no idea how to adapt it to the OE mini connections. That is frankly the only reason I have not put one on our R60 yet. The super expensive ones that come with said fittings are just that. Super expensive. I am open to hear if there is some other way around it....On my old R56 I did in fact chop that tube in half and adapt fittings to it.. didnt look the best.

Also on these N18s there is that smaller tube on the right side of the intake tube....says it is also crankcase ventilation....so I dont even know if the little can bypass the big one in the event a catch can is on the big one.

This is the little one I am referring to: https://parts.miniofkennesaw.com/pro...157632333.html

#19 on this one is the larger vent pipe: https://miniparts.checkeredflag.com/...3_1212.html#19
For $43 could chop it up, but that seems steep just to do that, especially when we dont know what to do with the little one (at least I do not)

I am sure all of this is in some 18 page long catch can thread somewhere, but whoknows lol

to adapt the can to the factory mini connections:

*purchase 2x brass NTP->1/2" nipples

Once you cut the hose, these fit perfect! Just hose clamp them in place and run some 1/2" heatercore hose off of the nipples to the catch can!

yeah we are wanting to NOT cut that hose, but adapt to somehow fit the connections. Probably only way is to buy those $$$$$ cans that come with them.

The OEM hose is like 18$ to replace..cut it. Spending hundreds to avoid chopping a hose with scissors is pretty ridiculous if think harder about it..

Right. I'd do that for $18. I keep seeing it for $40-45+ lol. I'm probably searching wrong...

*just wanted to add: It's been confirmed as well, that audi PCV is the same connection type and size..so if you are looking to buy a spare hose to chop..that may be a cheaper option.

**also looks like many mustang PCV hoses are same connection type too..much cheaper and readily available

Great stuff guys. For $18 I'll buy another one, see if I can get the ends off and get a hose that goes directly from those to the catch can. We'll see how that goes.

Thanks!!

Sorry to dig up a dinosaur...
CJ, can you clarify? I don't want to drop $40 on an AN fitting for Audi that doesn't fit...

***EDIT: He's banned... of course...
Anyone else able to confirm?
