Hardwire radar detector

Ok I searched the forum and there was a couple of threads where folks hardwired their detector. Unfortunately nothing recently so not sure if the colored wires changed.

I will be using Invisicord and mounting up by the mirror. Does anyone know what will be the switched power color and the ground power? The one thread the guy used light purple with blue stripe but then said his radar was staying on for 30 minutes because the power didn't shut off in the car for 30 min. Actually that was his radar shutting off after 30 min like most will do.

If no one knows then I will just jump in with my multimeter and go alone. I will post on this thread my findings for the rest to use.

Escort Max2
Invisicord
Cheapo permanent mount from Amazon (no suction cups but a very sleek/small mount that uses 3m tape)

This has been the set up for my last few cars and works great.

Like everyone else I'm no help on the wire but hard wired with a solid mount is the only way to go. I think I am going to send my V1 in for a refurbish and do the same. Otherwise this thing may cost me my license.

Well Tommy it looks like based on no replies I will be going alone on this one. I have done it on about 6 other cars so I should be good to go. I have all the tools, just need the parts. I will do a write-up with pics here to hopefully help out the rest.

Stay tuned.

Cool. When I'm ready at least I'll be able to get an answer.

Good luck,
Tommy

I had my passport redline hard-wired by a local installer called Ken,s Car Tunes. It is located just left of the mirror. Be sure it is wired so that it shuts off when car is turned off though.

I finally got all the parts to do the job.
1. Passpost Escort Max2. It is my favorite.
2. Invisicord 18" wire
3. Hard mount from Amazon, no suction cup. Attaches with 3m tape. Way more stealth.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is the car is just like my Porsche. the bad news it DOES NOT have switch power in the upper console. If you must have switched power then you will need to do the long run to the fuse block. The Max2 has an auto off function so no chance it will kill your battery if you forget.

Here are the pics. Sorry there are poor quality from my cell phone.

The outer plastic "bezel" just pulls off.

This secondary piece needs to be released with a flat screwdriver like shown here.
Hardwire radar detector-2.jpg
I tested every single wire, about 15 of them. there is only constant power.

Hardwire radar detector-4.jpg
The wire gets nicely fed through the same spot the factory wires already go through.

Here is the final shot. Yes I know many like the Blendmount that hangs from the rear view mirror. I do not. I like the detector to be up and out of the way not obstructing my view at all, the Blendmount hangs down and obstructs your view, especially if you are tall.

What year car? What color was the switch power wire? I literally tested every wire in the overhead and nothing was switched.

Or did you run the wire down the pillar into the fuse block?

Look up my posts and you'll find it -- 2015 JCW -- I have pictures in the thread. Remember, you have to double-hit the ignition to turn it off.

Yeah I searched a few. None of your threads call out radar detector and in the one you replied to you didn't mention the color wire that was switched. You don't remember the color? If not thanks anyways, not that important.

I just used an add a fuse item from Autozone, and ran the wire down to the main fuse panel.

You have to find a power turn on from the bock fuses, add a fuse should work.

I know guys you can run the wire and add a fuse. Got it. Not what I was asking. In all my other cars there is switched power up by the mirror so you dont have to run the wire all the way down and you use the invisicord.

Point was the gents above allegedly found that switched power and was asking him what color but I guess he doesn't remember and none of his posts of his hundreds have radar in the title so I am sure the info is buried somewhere in one of his posts and not easlily available. Again no big deal, mine works fine. If I forget to turn it off, it has auto shut off.

Where did you find ground? Do you recall which fuse location you used?

Thanks.

Ok, I think I found the post that caiken was referring to about doin a hard wire from the rear view mirror in his post above. It is from another site but from all I could find the wire harness is the same. Hope this helps as I was looking for the same thing _http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=780561

Oh yea, ordered my 2016 JCW black w/red last week. Can't wait to get it

So in that post it is the brown/green wire that is switched albeit on a BMW. Maybe the Mini is the same. I will see if my F56 has a brown/green wire today and report back.

No go. Not the same wire harness or even the same colored wires.

Any luck finding the pics? Really interested in just wiring from the rear view mirror power IF we can figure out the connection so it is only powered on with the car running.

Thanks

Just food for thought. I took my 2016 JCW into a car audio store the second day I owned it. They installed my new Redline up by the mirror in under an hour for $75.00!. It only comes on when car is running. Each to his own but I'd rather be driving instead of tinkering?

It also depends if you have the sunroof or not. Mine w/o the sunroof did not have any switched power

I personally would rather wire it from above - sunroof power... when some one cracks that let us know.
