Oil Temps

Hi,

I installed a P3 Gauge to monitor my temps, boost etc. and I notice that the oil temp certainly gets up there. I know these motors intentionally run hot, but I'm curious to know what's an acceptable average oil temp that you see on your JCW (if you have a gauge that is)?

Thanks in advance.

How do you like the gauge?
Does it read BMW/MINI codes or only OBD codes?

I didn't use it to read codes (unless you're referring to PID's). I have the Carly App and OBD dongle for that. As a gauge, it's not bad. Responsive on the rpm, speed and boost. It reads oil temp, coolant temp, boost, rpm, throttle load, speed and has a 0-100 feature. It looks ok, a retro style gauge would suit the car better for looks, but for functionality, the p3 wins.

Thanks for the response. I am pretty new to the BMW/MINI world but have
been working on cars for years. What I understand is that most off-the-shelf scanners will read all of the OBD II codes but there are many BMW/MINI codes that these scanners are unable to read because they proprietary. Haha...ok I have the Carly App on my phone but no dongle yet...I kinda forget about the app since I have never used it. So I guess a better question is does the Carly App read all of the proprietary codes that say a scanner like the Bavarian Technic reads ?

Carly's website says "factory level fault codes" so I will assume it reads everything. Any experience to what level this implies...or better put..have you pulled codes that maybe you couldn't pull with a OBD II scanner and give an example.

Also, since you have the P3 gauge and the dongle......I am guessing you have an OBD port splitter so you can use both the gauge and the dongle without having to unplug either. If you do have the splitter do you mind posting the part number and where you bought? Much appreciated.

I just unplug the P3 when I want to use the Carly, there is no point using both of them at once.

cruising on the freeway at 75mph ~235*
pulling a long hill at speed making boost ~240-250*
cruising around town and traffic ~220-225*

Not totally a JCW, but built pretty close to it. I use a ScanGauge. I was surprised just how hot the oil runs, and it probably explains why so many turbo cars that had long oil change intervals had so many engine oiling related issues.

I have a Marshall oil temperature gauge, it tracks the water temperature pretty closely, within five degrees.

I'm considering the P3 gauge to read coolant and oil but curious about your oil temp gauge. Where is the sender located please?

It is on the same adaptor as the oil pressure sender. On the head near the vacuum pump.

The Craven Speed adapter has multiple sensor ports I just positioned it in such a way that I could get the oil pressure, oil temperature and the OEM oil pressure sender on it at the same time. This is on an N14 engine, when they redesigned the N18 head they moved the oil pressure sender to the oil filter.

For a good answer to the original question, Google the oil that you have in your car....you'll learn about optimum temperatures.
