JCW upgrading to JCW
upgrading to JCW
sorry if this is seriously redundant, but a few searches didn't turn up what I wanted, so...
it's been a good year, and Santa said to spoil myself a little, so I'm thinking of upgrading my 2010 MCS with the engine kit... I've done the aftermarket stuff before and to be honest, I just don't feel up to the research/project of doing it... so this is a pretty quick-n-easy way to put a few more e's onto the wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I get every time I drive...
so my question is simple: who has done this, and how have you liked it?

You're talking about the MINI dealer add on where they cut your exhaust to add the JCW muffler, but don't take out the 2nd cat and they give you the JCW intake w/ECU program?
... It's a LOT of $$$ for the HP gain... call an independent mini shop and get JCW intake, DP, 2nd cat delete, REAL tune, and either spend a lot less or get a lot more for the $.

I have the JCW tuning kit on my 2012 MCSa and totally love it. I’d do it again no question.
The first thing to mention is that you have to weigh what is important to you. Some will say that you can get better gains with aftermarket parts for cheaper. This very well may be true, but it was much more important for me to keep the factory warranty and have a product that was designed specifically for the car. It was better in my case to keep it in the JCW family instead of going aftermarket because I plan to keep my car for a very long time and didn’t want issues down the road. I also have the JCW suspension, strut, and aero kit, so I really wanted to keep the JCW theme cohesive. Also, to me, the JCW kit seems the most hassle-free way to gain performance as the aftermarket tuning for MINIs is spotty and expensive at best.
The tuning kit on my N18 bumps the hp up to 197. While not staggering on paper, it is very noticeably better than stock. IMO, it’s the way a stock S should have been from the factory, since most of the power gain is from the tune. Interesting to me is that the all-new F56 S motor, despite getting a 25% displacement increase, will still put out less power than an N18 with JCW tuning kit!
Bottom line, I think you would be very pleased with the performance increase. However, only you can decide whether the price is right for you compared to how much you value having an actual JCW with full warranty versus aftermarket. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? In my opinion, yes.
Feel free to ask any more questions, good luck!
