Insurance

I finally got my production number for my 2012 JCW hatch, and now I have to start worrying about the details, like insurance.

I'm wondering, what should I expect to pay (I know being 23 will not help my cause..)? Any specific companies I should look at / avoid?

I'm 25 years old, minty clean driving record, and I'll be paying $60/mo with $500 comprehensive deductible and $1000 collision deductible with Geico. That's $360 for 6 months, or $720 for the year. Full coverage. This is on a 2012 MCS.

Most is going to depend on where you live, age, and driving record. I'm in AZ, 38, and clean record at about $810 for the year.

My insurance (for an MCS, not JCW) is going up about 40% for the identical coverage from my former car which was a 335i! I have a spotless driving record, great credit rating and I'm well over 25. It's the car, and I suppose the insurance company's experience with the car. The demographics of Mini drivers is probably much younger than 335i drivers and therefore the claims experience is worse so the premiums are higher.

You don't wanna know what I pay being stationed in Germany (their minimums are friggin RETARDED high) but I've used GEICO and USAA and loved both. GEICO gave me better rates in the US.

I won't even tell you how bad the rates are in NJ, but I can tell you with a clean driving record and married, NJ rates are sky-high. The base rate is just a factor of where you live and anyone in a highly-populated area will be hit pretty hard (coming from an insurance underwriter). you'd be surprised how little your deductible affects things, but I have been hit with increases every 6 months as my policy renewas for the past 5 years straight.

Way back when, when I was TOO old to remain on my fathers policy,,, I remember that Liberty Mutual gave me the best rates by far... Now that I am with USAA, they have been the best- MCS under $600/yr - multi-car discount.... Good Luck!

I just switched it over to my JCW GP today, and it actually went down $10....wooo hoo

22 years old. Clean record. NY. I can't remember the limits I chose but they were high. $97/month with Geico.

Young drivers pose a larger risk. It's proven that sometimes they drive like idiots. When I look back on some of the stuff I did on public roads I should have been put in prison for being stupid.

I'm also an insurance underwriter (relatively newly minted), which is why I'm asking asking for advice re: who to stay away from ! I've found incredibly wild swings in terms of price for what's ostensibly the same coverage in my sector. I imagine auto insurance is more stable carrier-carrier, but from the sound of this thread, I'll hit up Geico first.

Well congrats in that case and unfortunately, the rating factors are highly subjective. You'll cme to find out just how much of the rate is actually based on the carriers lack of investment income in a given quarter/6months/year, and how that actually ends up affecting rate the most.

As for companies to stay away from, that one's really going to vary and depend on your experiences. I know of people that love State Farm for example and others that have had a bad claims experience with them and won't go back to them. Most of us will simply go with whomever we get the best deal with. A lot of the pricing will also be based on eographic location as someone mentioned above, so if you're in a densly populated area, expect more rate increases and so you'll be more likely to shop your insurance around a lot more than say someone in the mid-west.

Try a number of places and I'd also suggest an agent who deals with multiple companies as they can quickly shop many carriers at once and often get a better deal than going direct to a company.

Asking someone about insurance premiums is like asking someone how much they spend on groceries! There are just too many variables to compare your rates to mine. Do you want state minimum coverage? Do you want comprehensive or collision coverage? How mucy deductible do you want. Zip codes, credit score, age, occupation, previous driving experience, garage or no garage all make a difference. The best thing you can do is contact the companies in the area you live and compare rates.

I live in midtown Manhattan, 45 yr old married, clean license , 2005 Cooper, convertible , it is parked in a underground parking garage, never left parked in the street, summer car only and i do approx 3000 miles a year . State Farm wanted $1100 for 6x months or $2200 per year ????

They said NYC is one of the most expensive places to insure.

I went to Progressive, installed one of those 'snapshots' in the slot under the dashboard drove around for a few months and now, fully comp it's $500 for 6 months, $1000 per year.
