The only issue appears to be trouble restarting when the engine is warmed up. It seems to work fine on the second try.

We're going on vacation for two weeks in a few days so we can easily drop it off at the dealer while we are gone so they can check it out. If it is the software (and based on the info here it sure sounds like it) I'm not sure whether I feel more comfortable waiting for the new update or having them roll back to the original version. Any opinions?
If they'll roll it back, get them to. Then, it doesn't matter when the fix is delivered.

Ironically I read about this thread while waiting for my MINI to arrive. I have a '10 MCS w/ the tuning kit and it's only 2 weeks old. It (no name yet) dies upon hot restart almost every day since I got it. (My MA says he's never heard of this complaint). I would like to know who's getting it rolled back and who's waiting for the fix?

Oddly enough the problem actually hasn't happened again since the day I posted. I did a hot restart 2 days ago and it idled a bit low but didn't stall. My wife drove it all yesterday without a problem. For now I'm waiting to see what develops. My wife did call the service department and mentioned that I had dug up some reports of the same issue that was cured by a software version rollback.

So we're just going to wait and see, as the problem seems to be getting increasingly intermittent.

Mine does that as well. I have had whole weeks where it did not do it one time, then a following week it may do it 10 times. Its about time for my next service so I guess I will try and get a roll back. I wonder if there is an offical service bullition from MINI yet stating to roll back any MINI's with similar issues?

Drove to Birmingham and back again this weekend and got 35 mpg out of one of my tanks. The other two were 34.something or other mpg. Not too shabby.

Looks like around town is settling into 29-ish to 30-ish mpg.

No restart problems at all.

Great to hear about your restored MPG Xeraux. I need to get my MINI oil changed this week. I am going to ask Mini of Birmingham to roll back my firmware assuming there is not updated fix available.

If they don't want to roll back my firmware and try to "fix" my car again instead I may have to take a trip to Memphis!

Not yet Mike but scheduled for in the morning. But I have a new problem, I assume is related? On the way to work for a moment the Nav unit made a sound and displayed a message "Engine! Reduced Power". I looked up at the road and back down and it was gone. On the way home, I hit one hill and as soon as I did, the same message appeared and stayed on till I got home. And I could definitely notice it had less power.

On another note, Mini of Birmingham said they have talked to MINI and did not know of any attempts to downgrade firmware nor are aware of any new updates in the process of being produced. And did not have any procedures on how to downgrade my MINI but would look into it. If they can't figure something out, I guess I am off to Memphis maybe and ask Xeraux who I need to talk to there. But I am going to try everything I can to get Birmingham to talk to someone who can get them instructions first since I am there.

I am definitely a little skittish about MTTS now...its only a few weeks away...

I hate answers like that...... . I would certainly contact Xeraux and get his contact in Memphis. I bet they could tell Mini of Birmingham how to do the change.

Hang in there my friend!

After many discussions with MINI service regarding my exact same problem, they have finally agreed to down-rev the software on the DME. Apparently they have to ship the DME back to Germany for the reprogram so it will take a couple of days. Besides the hot start stall issue, my check engine light has been permanently on the last four weeks and there is a decrease in power with full throttle and above 4k rpm. I hope that the new/old software will fix the power issue as the hot stall is more of a nuisance when compared to the engine power problems. They have already replaced the JCW muffler thinking that it was causing the "lean fuel" codes to no avail.

They do NOT have to ship the DME anywhere. It's a software download from Germany. Only electrons will be traveling back and forth.

It does take awhile to do the reprogramming though..

That's what I thought and that's what they did when I got the JCW tune. I wonder why they are telling this to me now. Maybe because it is a downgraded version? I have no idea. Car goes in next Wednesday for the procedure.

imviper - I think you are the first to have a muffler change out on this thread to combat the problem! I have had it 3-4 months now but live too far from the Dealer to try anything but about once a month.

They noticed today there was a new DME software released this week. Loaded it on mine, and they drove it about 10 minutes when the Reduced Power message reappeared. They are keeping mine till next week and gave me a loaner. BMW told them to hold it until they could schedule an engineer to remotely look at the software early next week. Said it would be someone from either Germany or New Jersey. They want to see why it has progressed from hot restart, CEL to now Reduced Power. The person they talked to were aware of the many other claims and may downgrade or attempt to fix the software.

Whoa!!

Seriously, I haven't had one minute's problem with the car since the rollback to the previous versions of the software.

Kev, I'm going to call Roadshow Mini and Mini of B'ham in the morning and see if I can get our guys to talk to each other about what Roadshow did to fix mine.

Dood. I'm really sorry.

As I type, I'm sitting at the Mini Dealer. They have reflashed my DME with the previous version software that includes the JCW tune. They did not have to send the DME to Germany for the reflash as I was previously told. They are saying that the hot start stall problem appears to be fix and there are no bad engine codes after the reflash. They are putting a few miles on the car before turning over the keys to me. Hopefully the CEL and hot start issue is in the past but I still have my doubts until I get some miles on the car since I believe the CEL problems came about due to DME fuel trim adapatations. I'll post any new updates later. They also told me that there is now a "process" in place for any unlucky souls that are having similiar problems, instead of having to submit puma cases and going down the long road of replacing hpfp, exhaust, etc. to no avail. Of course they told me that Mini still has no clue on what software upgrade that is causing the problem.

Almost identical story as imviper. Someone at BMW Corportate remoted in and wiped it out and loaded in an older version I was told. They also were told to replace some flow valve on the turbo charger. Could be because of that new reduced power message I was getting and not related to this JCW kit. Don't know, the dealer was just following orders at this point.

Anyway its washed and ready at the dealer waiting on me. Since this is the first time they have touched the software, I think I may have finally got what Xeraux got a while back. Going to pick it up this evening and have some fun with it!! I really miss my MINI!!

I know I have said this before, but I think I may be fixed!! Put on about 250 miles since picking it up and no lights. Also it seems more powerful than before, but maybe that is just becasue I have had an "S" for a week. Work order says
"Performed smoke tests of intake and vacuum with no problems found. Installed new Boost Pressure Sensor and Manifold Pressure Sensor, did not stop reduced power error. Contacted PUMA, PUMA performed an IRAP session and backed off JCW Software to a previous version due to incorrect programming design. Cleared fault memory and DME adaptations. No further problems could be found."
Also on the 2 hour trip home and 2 hour trip today I got 33 MPG. Since installing JCW I was getting 27 MPG on highway. Around town now getting around 29. That had dropped to 22 post JCW!! Looks like I am getting similar results as Xeraux on that too!!

I feel very releaved that I may finally be fixed!!

WOOHOO KEVIN!!! That is great news and sounds more like what you should be experiencing with the JCW software. Like was said before, when it is right it works really well! Give us another update this week sometime after you get more miles on it.

Been working beautifully, not one CEL. Not one hot start idling issues. No lag. Never been more than a day before.

Then on way to Birmigham today, I suddenly began to hear a whine from under the hood that got louder with RPM's (even in park). Then the engine with half yellow light came on and said Engine, Reduced Power again. I can't find where the noise was coming from but all the fluids are good. It comes and go and does reduce power signficantly while doing it. Just got home and when I was a few blocks from there, it started jerking a little. Argh!! This sounds more like something real and not software. No idea if it is related or not! I'll find out tomorrow if they want me to drive it down or pick it up!
