JCW kit recall

When my MA called yesterday to tell me my Mini had arrived, he said that they weren't able to install the JCW kit at the VDC. It has been recalled due to overheating of the exhaust tips....a safety issue because some owners have burned themselves. His guess is that it will be available in early January. Does anyone know more about this issue?

I just got my kit last week and it had the revision concerning the exhaust tips. I don't see why your kit would not have the upgrade too. From what I was told is that the pipes on which the tips mount are a little shorter. This makes the tips tuck back under the bumper cover more than they used to. Good luck and let us know what the outcome is.

I'm glad I had mine installed before the revision, and I hope they don't make it a mandatory recall. I like being able to read the JCW logo on the tips.

ASK MINI reiterated that the JCW kit is being redesigned for '09 models. Must be more than just the exhaust tip issue. Looks like I landed on the other side of the fence and will have to wait until the project is complete. They said it won't be long and I'm fine with that. I'll drive a regular S for a bit and then......ZOOM!

I guess that's probably a good thing for me and my wife. I'm sure one of us would have burned our leg on ours, or worse, our son would have. I'm probably going to paint the tips black, anyway, since I'm de-chroming the whole car eventually, so the tips not sticking out will work for me.

That's right I heard about that. It's a fitment issue with the 09 models that requires redesign of the exhaust part of the system. Sorry to hear you have to wait, but I think you'll appreciate the difference that much more

I talked to my dealer today. The pipes just stick out too far and people lean on them. Ooops The are just cutting the exhaust from what I understand.

The delay has to do with MINI redesigning the hangers for the muffler (which may have something to do with people burning themselves).

More people have been burned on the stock exhaust than the JCW exhaust.

Lotsa room then...

How about some pics? I just had my kit installed today (10/10/08 ordered on 10/3/08) and the kit is same as it has always been. I'll be happy to be proved wrong, but everyone on this thread who says their kit has been shortened, has not posted any pics to prove it. My proof is right here. I will even scan the work order tomorrow. So to all the sensationalists out there, put up or...you know the rest!

I don't understand why they started doing this just now, back then with the 1st gen, there were people getting their legs burned by the exhaust tips, you have have to be careful, but they never made it a recall, I'm sure you're able to burn your legs on the non JCW tips as well if you're not careful.

Why aren't the other models recalled?

Man, I know the tips get hot and I've burnt myself but more importantly, have you ever washed the tips with a rag? I usually use a wash mitt to wash my car but when I went to Mickey and Mini's in Fl., they only had wash rags.

Those tips are SHARP... sliced my hand open

I just had the Stage 1 installed last weekend. What I was told is that the install instructions have been updated to have them adjusted further in to lessen the chance of burns on them. The tips themselves are the same.

I had mine installed further out so the logo wouldnt be hidden. I will just have to pay attention for burns and cuts it looks like

My tips definitely do not stick out that far. I will try and get a pic posted tomorrow. Can you get another pic of the inside of the tips? I would be curious to see how far on the pipe they have been placed.

Mine were installed back in the summer before the update, and they don't stick out quite that far. I'm sure part of it comes down to the dealer doing the install.

These tips look like they stick out more. When I first got the car, I caught a few burns on the regular MCS tips before I got used to staying away from them. I think the JCW tips are less dangerous than the stock. There's only one small, thin area on top where your leg is likely to come into contact with the tip. The stock tip is thicker and the end of the tip is all on the same plane. It can leave a big O on your leg.
