Interior/Exterior SMOOTH SCOOP
SMOOTH SCOOP
Hello everyone I was thinking about turning my hood scoop into a more permanent one. Instead of having that horrid line all around the scoop I was thinking about having it "puttied" in like some of you have.
Is this a very hard mod to perform on my own?
Should I hire a professional painter to do this?
How much would this cost?
Thanks to all that help me in this process.
P.S. from the way that the blue mini is to the way the red mini is now.

If you want a professional looking job, get a professional to do it. As far as cost goes, every shop has there own rate and rates can vary greatly in different parts of the country. For example, I bet a good shop in LA charges a lot more than one in Buffalo. Here in western NY, this job would likely cost at least $1500. To do this right you'll need to repaint the whole hood. And you'll want to find a shop that has experience with this type of thing. Unfortunately, you'll pay a premium for their expertise.

Not sure exactly how much, but your going to need a good bodyman to mud in and smooooth out the scoop just right and then paint the entire hood to match the rest of car. To do it right by a good bodyshop I would guess between $500.00 to $1000.00. Just a guess...
should never use bondo on something like that. When people shave things in the euro scene they all shy away from bondo as it tends to crack under pressure thus ruining your paintjob.
gl and i think it looks hawt.
You might look into a Carbon Fiber hood. Why? The scoop is molded into the hood already. One part. Then you could "bondo" up that seam quite easily. If you were to try doing this on a stock hood/scoop it would be very difficult to do. I say this as I have not seem one MINI yet were the scoop is perfectly flush to the hood. Secondly, the two stock parts will viberate differently and will probilly show stress cracking very quickly, aided by the thermal temperture change you car goes through in a year.
ive never seen a cf hood with the scoop molded in. can you send a link or show us which company makes the cf hood with the scoop?
this is tüls' ride with the cf hood:

and here's dopamine's ride:

I do believe that the proper material that i have seen on many VW's (i believe its dura-glass or dura-bond or something of that sort....but dont hold me to that, i will ask again to make sure) can withstand a lot of abuse. They mold their front lips to their bumpers often and use this material over bondo as you are bond to flex the front lip. This stuff prevents the stress cracks and should be fine on the scoop. That maroon car has been around for over a year and is still fine
Glen- dopamine's hood scoop is molded in....he can't remove it. But it still isnt a smooth mold....but still all one piece
I pulled the maroon car's picture somewhere off of NAM. maybe a lowering springs' thread, or a wheel thread. I am glad that you all like this. It may be a while though until I do this mod, I was not thinking that this would run me any where from $500-$1500!!!

The first problem is trying to effectively bond metal to plastic. From the shops I have seen tackle this kind of work you would need some one to make you a new scoop in Metal and then weld it in.
A costy job but when done right it looks killer. Find yourself a good Hotrod shop. They usually have people who are skilled in bendinng and shaping metal into any form.
