It is very close to being right-on, the only problem I have had is, red under the heat of the bulb being on fades the little red condom out in about 4 to 6 months so I have to change them out from time to time to keep that Joe Cool look going.

I use Stewart-Warner LEDs in my Auto Meter gauges. The amber versions are the same color as the rest of the instruments. The illumination scheme is different than the stock instruments though, while the tach/speedo shine orange light through translucent numerals and illuminate the pointer in red, the Auto Meter gauges use an edge lighting scheme that illuminates the front of the gauge face as well as the pointer. While you can match the color, the look at night will be different.

I should have the lighting on my Autometer gauges hooked up later, but I'm using amber 194 bulbs. I'll let you know how they look compared to the stock lighting.

BTW, Autometer makes LED kits for their gauges, I may try that if the amber bulbs don't look right.

The Autometer LED's are not very bright. I took 'em out. Ended up using some EL Cheapo filters ("condom" type) from PEP Boys. Got the red ones. They match pretty well and have lasted beter than the Autometer filters.

Cool, thanks for posting. So much for the Autometer idea.

The amber LEDs from Auto Meter are yellow, not orange ('amber' seems to be used to describe both colors). I tried both the red and 'amber' (yellow) Auto Meter LEDs originally, the red is a much better match than the yellow, and the yellows are not very bright compared to the reds. Instead I found the SW orange LEDs and gave them a shot. Color is a perfect match, though they could stand to be brighter. With the SW LEDs, it's possible to mod them for a bit more brightness, since they are actually 4 individual LEDs mounted to a small pc board with separate current limiting resistors. The Auto Meter LEDs are molded, one-piece items.

Most Auto-Meter gauges have a two-wire lamp socket, one for power (get this from the dimmer source, the grey wire with red stripe in the main harness or at the radio, see pic below) and one for ground. Note that the Stewart-Warner LEDs are polarity sensitive, if they do not function at first, remove from the socket and turn 180 degrees and reinstall. The Auto Meter LEDs have a built-in bridge rectifier which makes the polarity not matter. They just dont come in orange. :lol

Autometer also makes the ultralite II guages that use leds for backlighting. They match the overall illuminate through the dial like stock, but they dont have them in red, only white.

someone never seen it before??
in the back of the autometer there are 2 little hole, over they i put a 3m tape for not escape light, maybe it should be a problem?
thanks
