Want to MINImize your automatic toll device?

Today I mounted my Speedpass device with black Velcro... Also reapplied a nice black coat of Sharpie permanent black ink to the thing. Now the it doesn't stick out on my windscreen like a sore thumb.

I did the same thing with my Fastrack pass here in California. Instead of using Sharpie on the plastic box, I used some Krylon Fusion paint and then black Velcro. I barely notice it any more.

Easypass in NY now has a license plate holder with a built in easypass. I will be calling to get mine replaced.

Reference please? I'd love to do this, if only I could figure out how! (The NY E-ZPass site has nothing to say on the subject.)

Thanks!

Great ideas Dave and RCE1.

You are both insane, by the way (unfortunately I share the same affliction and will be blacking out my EZ-Pass this weekend!)

Sunpass transponders here in Florida have suction cups and they neatly attach to the inside of the windshield.

Older transponders had velcro straps.

The best way to do a "stealth" install with an EZPass / Speedpass / Smart Tag / Sunpass is to mount it in the front of your rear sunroof pane (assuming you have a sunroof). The MINI is short enough that it still works fine there. This also assumes you don't have a metallic-based tint installed on your sunroof that will block the signal.

It's COMPLETELY out of sight this way - and is not inferfered by opening the sunroof either! As for blacking it out, instead of using a permanent Sharpie, I used black electrical tape. Works great, and if it eventually peels off, it's easy to reapply. Mine is going strong after 18 months of tape application.

I found that mounting my EZpass up high by the rear view mirror (as the instructions recommended) didn't work reliably. It often wasn't detected as I went through a toll booth. My theory is that the steep angle of the windshield increased the likelihood that the roof would block the signal.

So I experimented and found that if I stuck it down where the windshield meets the dash it worked much better. I made a little black velvet pouch for it and it blends right in.

I spray painted my e-pass black also. No need to get black velcro-just paint it black when you do the e-z pass. It still attatches the same and is much less visible.

No toll roads around here, so I can't really relate, but I will say that you folks are nuts!

Who will be the first MINI graphics company to offer checkerboard or Union Jack EZ-pass decals?

Funny you should mention this - I was just thinking about it the other day. Glad I'm not the only one.

I'm telling you guys - the best solution is right here:

MotoringFile » Archive » Low Buck MINI Mods

It's the 3rd mod listed.

I avoided all of this by moving 6 miles away from work. Only downfall is I don't get to drive the MINI as much.

It's cool to know that others think similarly in the world of our MINIs. :-)

City Theft

I live in the city, and I keep in in the glovebox, and put it on the dash when I need it.

Velcro-ing it to the headliner or making it black with a sharpie is too ghetto for me. I did try velcro-ing it to a loop hanging from the hand holds/hooks in the rear, but it's just as easy putting it on the dash.

I "painted" my EZPass by wrapping it with electrical tape.
I've had it mounted in my rear sunroof but the velcro adhesive doesn't hold up in extreme temps and it seems to always fall out. I need to find something stickier.

That's suprising as the velcro stuff it comes with is pretty heavy duty. But if anyone has EZPass and hasn't done the rear sunroof mount I highly recommend it It actually works better than it did when I was just holding it up to the windshield the first couple weeks I had it...

Yes it is, but when removing it from the front and moving it to the sunroof you need to use some new velcro backing, and the regular velcro I have just doesn't have as strong adhesive. Perhaps I can Gorilla Glue it

This sounds ridiculous, but I just velcroed my toll tag to the back of my registration sticker. Of course I have to remove and replace the velcro whenever I get a new state sticker, but eh. It's not perfect but it doesn't take up any valuable windshield space.
