DIYing Bonnet Stripes

How many people have done their own? I just got a quote for $150-175 to install mine, which sounds ridiculous to me.

I'm confident I can do the boot ones myself after reading several threads where people DIYed them.

Are the bonnet stripes a lot more difficult?

Not at all... Lay them out and secure them on the hood with masking tape, re-check them against points like the windsheild wiper nozzles and the edge of the bonnet, and then use the same technique to apply as you would for boot stripes.

I actually found the bonnet stripes to be easier than the boot stripes, and am glad I did them first (The boot stripes follow a more severe angle over a shorter span).

I think the dealer only charges around $100 for bonnet stripes, so I'd say the price you were quoted was high.

Great mod and easy to do. Good luck!

Okay. I'm vaguely terrified but I'm going to do it myself.

Is there any advantage to doing them over or under the clear bra? On one hand, I want them protected, but on the other, if they fade/crack/peel/whatever in 2 or 3 years, I don't want to have to redo the whole bra. I'm stumped.

Seems to be expensive everywhere... It's not cheap in the UK either... Prices range from £87 to well over £100 to have stripes fitted... I had mine done by a dealer for £87 and they scratched one putting it on... So they took it off and replaced it... I found the BMW stripes very easy to damage...

You'll do fine... the trick really is in the prep. Clean the paint really well with classic blue Dawn to remove old wax, and if you have it, run a clay bar over the area as well, just to be 110% sure you don't trap anything under the stripe, then lay it out with the backing still on the stripes, just like my How-to. I'd have a second set of eyes handy to check your alignment before sticking them down, or you can tape them down with masking tape and walk away for 10 minutes... a set of "fresh" eyeballs will show you if you're not perfectly aligned.

Once the stripes are placed properly, the actual installation is a snap... Just go slow and let the squeegee do all the work.

And don't forget to post pictures afterwards! We love pics!

As for the clear bra, Search the forums for "clear bra" and I know there are several other threads asking this question... I don't have one personally, so I can't say. Sorry!

If you spray lots of soapy water on the hood and on the stripe, you can slide them around until you have them just right. I use a micro fiber rag wrapped around a squeegy, and take the protective portion of the stripe off before applying them. They are soooooo easy to do, it takes all of 5 minutes. Good luck guys.
