Head Lights Came On

When I was working on the Mini last night the head lights came on when I diconnected the tach' plug. I rotated the head light switch to 'on' then 'off' and the lights went off.

Is this normal?

If nothing blew up or made loud noises it sounds alright to me.

Interesting, mine did the same thing this afternoon after electrical work at the dealer. The oil temperature guage wasn't wired correctly, they fixed it and then I drove off and turned the headlights on. The first time I turned the car off, there was a single chime from the dash as I exited the car, I checked the light switch and it was switched off. I then saw that the lights were in fact on. I did the same thing you did, I cycled the light switch and they went out. Have only started it and then turned the ignition off once since then but so far appears to be a one time occurance. Maybe just another one of those quirky things about Mini instrumentation??

is it possible that you inadvertantly hit the turn signal lever and activated the 'follow me home' feature which turned the headlights on for 30 or 60 seconds?

Very possible since I don't even know what the follow me home feature is...,, Can you explain? Or did I miss it in the owners manual? Sounds like the delay that my Buick has once the headlights are turned off, but that is everytime I stop the car. Apparently there is a driver activated option to do that on a Mini? (Can you tell I have only had the car a couple weeks??)...

"follow me home option": if your car is programmed for this:

shut car off, remove key?, then hit the turn signal lever and headlights will stay on for an interval preprogrammable into the computer, usually 30 or 60 seconds

Disconnecting control units and switchs causes caos within the still connected components. Don't worry about it

Causes caos

I did not hit the turn signal when this happend. I was worried because the first time the lights came on I was just unscrewing the bolts that hold the tach to the column.

Glad to know this happened to others and it is not a problem. That is all I was looking for.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
