My New Exhaust Tips... A Warning!

I recently picked up a set of the larger MINI exhaust tips from Outmotoring. Nice pieces of kit, though a little expensive for what you get, but still very pretty. So, last week I popped the original ones off, and repleced them with the new ones. Easy enough I thought, all you have to do it tighten a small screw that locks it into place against the real exhaust pipe. I was a little worried that this wouldn't be particularly secure, but the originals were mounted the same way, so I figured they'd be fine.

Cut to two days after the installation, coming home from work in busy traffic. I heard a sharp metallic sound from behind the car. I look in the rear view mirror, and see this shiny round object bouncing behind me, and then hit the car behind me. About two seconds later I realise what just happened and pull over. After a little work I manage to retrieve the right tip. It's been run over at least 10 times, flattened and scraped along the road. You can imagine the words coming out of my mouth at that point.

So, as a warning, if you buy the larger tips, either get them installed professionally, or use something to secure them in place, otherwise you'll have one of these...

Eek! Sorry to hear about that!

I self installed my tips a week ago and I'm still mildly worried about them. I check them whenever I use the California Duster and haven't seen any loosening. The stock tips were installed without welding so I'm still thinking the 'official' installation method should be sufficient.

I thought the official installation method would suffice too!
I'd recommend a locking nut or lock-tite or yes, tack welding in place. Unfortunately I didn't have the equipment in my apartment to do that...

Seeing as how the OEM tips have the same fastener, I wonder what happened? Perhaps Locktite is the answer... Sorry it happened to you, man.

I'd use a bolt and flat washer on one side, and a nut and star washer on the other . . . and locktite.

doh! i would secure it using loctite while the pipe is completely cold.
just a good tightening with a small 1/4 ratchet should do.

My tips are bolted in. I would cry if they fell off and got mangled in traffic.

holdenontoit-
Wow! Beautiful exhaust! Not that familiar with Remus, but love the tips and love the sound clips I've heard. I'm driving a 2003 MCS CR/W with Alta CAI and 15% pulley, since you're driving an '03, assume your Remus model # would be the same for me.
Who was the vendor you got it through? Costs? Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Terry

use a ratchet set rather than mere allen keys. You'll never get the same locking pressure that a rachet would do.

I just put on my tips this weekend.

Look fantastic.

on second thought

my tips came with a bracket that connects the two tips together. Has anyone else used this bracket as part of the install?

Apparently, the bracket is to help align the tips.

Having said that I didn't use them either.
