Non-OEM Boot Fire Extingusher Install

In light of some recent cases, I decided to install this just in case. Also I'll be able to move it and use it during track days. Install and time in store was about 15min. and the total cost was $12(10 forthe extinguisher and 2 for the box of screws), also included was 2 chem sticks that I have stored in the adjacent cubbie. And yes I plan on vaccuming the boot tomorrow.

The jack is on the other side of the boot and the tool kit is with the batt. and I keep a LED flashlight under the toggle bank so I can easily see everything at night, I was pleased (and a little suprised) just how OEM the final product looked.

Nice job! Where'd you get the extinguisher for only $10?

Picked it up at Wal-mart in the automotive section, avoided the bling chrome one for the standard red as it was a little less costly and came with the mounting bracket. Its a 5-BC so it won't work well on carpet or seat (unless you manage to somther it and remove air from the triangle) but is good for the electrical and chemical fire which would be my larger conerns. five years down the road, just drop another $10 into a replacement (can even save the powder from a non-used outdated extinguisher in a baby wipe container and keep it in the garage so should a small fire start can cover it like you would with baking soda).

Agreed, can't quite tell if your is chrime or a polished black from the photo, but it fits in well with the interior . I recognized your MINI right away though, I guess with all the other mods you fire extinguisher slipped my mind.

Is it safe in the boot? I would suspect you wouldn't have enough time to get to it if a fire broke out in the engine bay? I was thinking of mounting one on the passenger side by the downtubes. The boot seems like an easy and out-of-the-way nice place to install it. How exactly did you install/bolt it down?

I figure if there is a fire in the engine bay, that I am capable of fighting, then I have 30 sec. to get it out, if something happens at the gas pump then I figure 10 sec. so I think the boot is ideal for everyday driving (plus my cabin configuration usually means I would not need to exit the vehicle to acess the extinguisher, though it is a bit of a strech if I had to I could get it). Also the engine bay fores have been know to happen with the vehicle off, in this case it is safer to have the extinguisher in the rear to limit exposure and proximity to the flames. When I'm at the track it WILL rode shotgun afficed to the downtube via metal bracket (have not yet fabricated but expect to be a 5 min. project). I mouted it with two 3/4 inch screws that drilled into the plastic in the same place the OEM mout riviets would have been placed

Interesting this should be brought up again today; the screws I had managed to pull everything out of the plastic, so I will be fabricating a bracket for the seat like Ken mentioned, that way I won't need to move it for the track or passengers.

Looks good Drew!

I've had an old surplus 5 lbs CF3Br model for years, ever since my airbox VW days!

I usually have a fire extinguisher in my truck, but it is for putting out small fires on the side of the road, etc.

If a car is on fire, I am going to get the heck away from it. No need to be a hero to save someone's piece of metal, and if my MINI is burning, the last thing I want to do is make it possible for the insurance company to repair rather than total a crispy MINI.

That being said, I have put out a brush fire on the side of the road in Colorado with one. I finished about 5 minutes before the fire department got there. Despite having done their job for them, they would not give me another fire extinguisher to replace the one I used.

^^^ with the money and time invested into car AND the fact that insurance wont cover most of the aftermarket stuff becuase I don't have receipts I would rather put the fire out...

Whoa didn't realize this was such a hot topic.

I'm with MSFIT on this one, I'd rather have pump and some insulation replaced instead of a whole car.

Plus now I have it within arms reach, meeting racing regulation standards.

regardless of their selfishness, good job!

i've yet to fabricate a bracket for my extinguisher...

Damn! I bought this same extinguisher at target, get home, and it appears to be empty. The instructions say the little plunger at top should bounce back up when you push it, but mine's dead, nuthin.
