Interior/Exterior Sick Question: Has anyone removed the foam located at the base of the boot(vents)?

Sick Question: Has anyone removed the foam located at the base of the boot(vents)?
What purpose are those "vents"? Would it make the exhaust louder inside the car if the foam was removed? I did say it was a sick question. Can the foam be removed without yanking it through the vent holes? Thanks.
