My question is. Could I purchase another US type switch box and part it out to modify my exiting switch box? Will the switches from the extra box fit into the bank spot? I would think that would be easier to do than to find a European box, plus you can customize the backlit icon to match the function you want the switch to do.
Yes, you can do that. However, you will need to drill out the blank spot in the US spec toggle switch cover (the black part with the icons). Once you do that, you can use one of the silver toggles from the other switch bank.

NOTE: There are some sizing issues with the toggles. Some toggles, such as those for the fog lights, are lit, and the base is slightly different. All of this can be sorted out by drilling different size holes in the blank spot of the US toggle bank cover.

Be careful with the toggle switch cover. Like the rest of the MINI interior, the color is PAINTED on the plastic, so it's easy to scratch it.

Let me know if you need any more info.

See ya,
JS

What do you know about the fog light toggle base being different?
When I disassembled my panel last week, every measurement we made (with calipers) showed the fog toggle to be the same size as the others (just with a light pipe up its inside).

That's interesting. I have the full toggle set, but haven't taken it apart, personally.
I was basing my info on these two exchanges on MINI2:

Ah, but only the front-fog or rear-fog toggle will work in the rear-fog position. The pivot points are bigger - probably to help catch mistakes during assembly.

Or did you figure out how to drill out the pivot hole on the switch toggle bits? It looked tricky to me.

Followed by:

The illuminated switches do have a different size. While the non-illuminated switches snap in, they are sticky. A bit of drilling out the hole should fix it right up. Anyone handy enough to carve out the panel hole could do it.
Here is the actual exchange:

I do not know the person that made the mod. I got most of the info from MINI2 forum. JS has already given a link to that thread. Lots of great information there. The person that did the garage door mod is active on that site. He may be able to answer your questions. I will be receiving my MCS in about two months and I am planning on doing this mod at that time. I know, that is a way off from now and may be old hat by then, but I'll post my log of the mod when I do it.

I'm very bewildered why MINI has not ceased this opportunity to offer a different function for the unused toggle in the US MINI's. :???:
