My DTM shiftknob arrived (pic)
So my BMW DTM shiftknob arrived today. It is surprisingly light and quite tiny.
It is about 2 1/4 inches tall and measures about 2 inches wide at the head. Insertion depth of the shifter is right about 1.5 inches. But this **** is actually threaded unlike other BMW *****.
I will weigh it tomorrow, but it is most likely one of the lightest ****. That brings up the Q, why do German Touring Car racers have the lightest **** and we seek out the heaviest ones? :-) (I do understand the idea of a nice weighted ****)
Cheers,
H

To save weight. Every gramm of weight counts on a race car. Most important is roataing weight. I occasionally race radio controlled cars and weight matters. The general rule is if you can save an ounce of rotating weight it is like reducing non roating weight by 4 ounces.
Heck most race cars now use sequential gear boxes and paddle shifters. In WRC they have paddle shifters and a shift lever that can also be used to activate the emergency brake.
