Blue Dash Lights

Just sharing some pics. I promised to post these a few months ago, once everything was installed. Nothing new here, its been done before. I used tips/howto from NAM and MINI2 to do mine. Also included are custom oil pressure and boost guages that match great IMO.

1 weekend, about 85 surface mount LEDs, solder iron, hemostats, and a lot of squinting. De-solder old LED, resolder the new.

I have a large word document w/pics -- compiled and blatantly stolen from the two guys that originally pioneered the dash color DIY.

PM an email address and I'll send it or simply do a search here and MINI2 to find the DIYs.

The guages are custom ordered from Speedhut.com No additional cost for graphics, txt or colors. They are electronic not mechanical and easily fit in the guage pod and don't interfere with the dash.

Darn, I looked at the photos thinking, "I like the stock color" and then I thought, "Wow! That look Great" now what do I do? Then I read this and went 85/de-solder/resolder and I then thought, "I like the stock color"

The blue looks great but you saved me money be hinting at the cost/labor involved.

And, No don't tell me it's really easy you just..........

I don't need to know.

LOL! Ok, I won't . Same reaction when local Mini owners see it... "Wow, what did you do? oh, nevermind"...

That's an el-cheepo "Faze" brand A/F meter... soon to be replaced by another Speedhut A/F meter. Speedhut only just released an A/F meter.

Its mounted on the A pillar with a universal pillar pod. I used a heatgun to remold it to more accurately fit the A pillar. The pod is the same dark grey as the dash. It doesn't clash too bad with the off-white A-pillar.

That is a VW look, blue dash lights... I like it, totally different, I kind of like the red illumination too, so I would consider the blue and red combo harmonized tastefully.

If it's one thing i love to do, it's tearing apart a car to play with things And you ALWAYS learn something new while you're digging into it. See a bunch of cool new gadgets. And it's always best to have someone experienced around you while doing it. just so you can sit there for hours asking "what's that?" "how does that work?" "what does it do?" "what can i replace it with?"

Seeing this made me miss the mod bug i had with my old car. I'm half tempted to keep the Cooper and go to town on it

Thx for kudos, everyone. Not intentionally VW-ish, although I like their recent years dash colors... I just REALLY like blue.... and well... I am a Sailor so blue is my thing.

Well, I have finally joined the blue dash club. I followed BluMiniMe's how-to, and everything turned out great! I left the needles and computer displays amber, so during the day you can't tell that anything's different. But at night, it looks sweet! Only one problem: the LED's for the radio and MFSW are different than the rest. Does anyone know a part number for these? I didn't have any luck with the Digikey part numbers, so now I'm kinda stuck with a half-finished job. Can anyone help me?

I can't post pics yet - my wife took the camera with her on a trip up north... my dash looks like BluMiniMe's, except I haven't done the radio yet, and I don't have the extra gauges. I'll post some pics as soon as I can

Worth the Work

1) the blue dash is doggone Kewwl...

2) the developer of the "up with one touch" window circuit ought to contact Short Bus, in the name of technical support (oh, wait, he got married didn't he?)

3) I have seen gauge packs (unofficial terminology alert) that can change color (think $$) at the touch of a button... Would it not be cool to be able to flip the (fictional) "OBG" (orange/blue/green) switch, and change the whole mood inside your MINI???

Off to check out just how much work is involved,
Tatt

PS it's snowing cats 'n dogs in Chicago,
