Any using an autometer guage cup?

I wanted to add a boost guage to my MCS. I purchased an Autometer boost guage and their "cup" (bell like housing) but I have had the following problem.

The diagram shows that the guage plus brass hardware (back) all fit within the guage cup so coming out the back via a rubber gromet should be the plastic tube (goes to vaccum line in th engine) and electrical wires. My problem is that the brass hardware sticks out. I attempted to fully screw the brass fixtures all the way. This required a lot of torque so much so that the needle moved and is no longer at zero. I returned the guage and got a new one . I had inquired if it should all end up inside and awaited my new guage to arrive. I torqued the new brass fittings and guess what? The needle moved again. Funny how I've got 1 lb of boost and its not hooked up!!! So now i have to send this one back AGAIN!

Either they are full of sh*t (i.e. should all fit inside) or it will stick out a bit. I just want to do it right.

Read several posts recommending buying a really good guage - perhaps my solution is keep th eautometer cup but use a different guage.

has anyone used the autometer guage cup? what were your results? What guage did you use?

appreciate any input.

PS _ i posted pics in the gallery (under bahamabart) of my guage set-up / design. I think it came out pretty good but at present I don't have it hooked up.

I have the same setup and the brass fitting does stick out the back a little. The way I set it all up it isn't very visible though so I wasn't concerned about it. You might want to try a digital boost gauge instead because the vac line doesn't go all the way to the gauge and it makes for a cleaner install. Good Luck!

I used the same cups and gages as you. To hide the brass fitting I painted them flat black and put black heat shrink tubing over the vacuum hose and wiring. I sanded the back of the RH cup (oil pressure) to match the curve of the dash plastic so the cup could tuck in closer to the dash. This made a very clean install. Good luck with yours.
