Installing 2005 Door Armrests on 2003

Hey everybody !!!

When I finally sat in the 2005 MINI I really liked the new door armrests which come out further and make the door storage more useful and the armrest more useful as well.

It looks like I could remove just the armrest bar with 3 screws and install the 2005 version in its place. Is this a possibility? Has anyone tried it?

It would be something I would seriously consider doing and it looks easy to do i.e. I can't possibly screw it up

I had checked at my dealer for these and it appears that the armrests are not sold seperately. I'm hopeing that it will just be a matter of time until they are available.

Expensive Mod!!

When I took delivery of my 03 Cooper I noticed a scratch on the door trim. It looked like a gouge from a screwdriver. I called my dealer and said I wanted the door trim replaced. I have the silver trim on a black door panel. I assumed they could just unscrew the silver armrest trim and replace just that part. Nope! The door trim/armrest has to come with the door panel. Meaning you have to replace the entire door panel complete with armrest. I'm sure of this because when I went to have mine repaired they ordered the light gray door panel instead of the Panther black. I went back when the correct door panel came in. Seems strange that you can't just replace the armrest but that would be too easy.

yep, thought it would be cool too to swap out for a more useful door armrest, but one of our ma's said he looked into it already, and nope, no can do w/o swapping out the whole panel.

the add on ones at moss motors look cool, for less hassle and money. they are also bigger then the 05 versions for a better armrest.

aftermarket armrest

I just saw those door pannel armrests offered at Moss as well, and appears to be a good design. Anyone know how they attach?

The three screws that you are referring to actually mount the entire panel (along with another screw behind the reflector on the edge of the door) to the door itself. The armrests are heat riveted to the door panel.

I called up Moss about those new door arm rests...I was told that they attach with velcro...they do look good in the picture but the color is jet black....the stock useless door arm rest is that black cloth but is more of a dark dark grey color, so I wonder how the jet black leather will look

Wow, some activity on this thread

I was wondering if anyone did it before I even considered it. Looks too complicated and expensive to me. For some reason, MINI made many of the panels in the interior one piece like the doors and the rear speaker & armrest. I was considering maybe getting a sound system upgrade but I don't want them to take the interior apart just to add speakers, although I'm sure the stereo installers know what they are doing.

Someday perhaps there will be aftermarket door panels designed for pulling apart, repainting, switching out arm rests...all that stuff. Right now those door panels are all-or-nothing items it seems (...I had some replaced, too).

A long time ago I had read some accounts of people who actually did pull the whole door panel apart, unfused the heat rivets, and reassembled all the parts using hot glue to re-weld the pieces. Haven't seen anything on this for years, though.
