Couple points..

there have been other issues where Mini's position was that retrofit wasn't possible, but it was. But I'd bet that you have to watch what year the Homelink option started showing up (I really have no clue)....

The connector plugging into the basic rear-view is to keep it from rattling around in the car. They may be able to use the same part with no electronics installed....

Actually...the sensor for the keyless entry is located in the mirror, so that wire serves a purpose. I found that out the hard way. I had removed my mirror to check if it was indeed prewired for the Homelink version and found that my remote no longer worked. It took a trip to the dealer to get it fixed.

Does anyone have this part #? (my local dealer could not find it) I would like to order one too.
Thanks!

For autocross, you could just tuck the wiring connector up in the roof liner until you put the mirror back on. Just takes a second.

P.S. There's a whole line of products that can be activated by Homelink, such as deadbolts for locking/unlocking doors, lamp controls, sprinkler systems, landscape lighting, etc. Check out the Homelink website. I believe RadioShack sells Homelink compatible controls. The Homelink rearview comes with 3 buttons. I have 1 for the gate, 1 for the garage, and a third for future endeavors.
Hey Tarzan....I have an '06 with the standard mirror. I want to add the Homelink auto dim. Do you suppose my '06 is pre-wired? Do you think removal/installation is the same? Do you think the plug is easily accessible?

Classic Mini is having a difficult time agreeing to take it back if it doesn't work. I'm having an equally difficult time spending $420 not knowing if it will work. And I can't seem to find a definitive answer on whether it will work or not. The homelink website doesn't really say a whole lot. The best answers I got so far are "It should work" and "I don't see why it wouldn't work". My dealer has been "checking on it" for the past 6 weeks.

I'd really like to get this mirror. Yours works. I guess the big question now is "Is the '05 and the '06 the same?"

The cars are wired the same, and the mirror will fit. The homelink will work. The only thing I don't know the answer to is whether the autodim will simply work while plugged in, or need programming, or what??? I just don't know.

A suggestion would be to ask the dealership to let you try the mirror off a car from inventory, or to swap mirrors with a local club member/owner.

It literally twists off and unplugs.

Ok....I'll go and try to do some twisting. But one thing I forgot to mention as I just got off the phone with Classic parts, was now I'm being told that the stem and base of the new mirror are different. And I will be required to order additional parts. This is getting pretty deep.

Something seems a bit odd. You have an 06 manual mirror with no homelink and you want to replace it with an auto-dim mirror with homelink? RealOEM lists them as using the same mounting base. I suggest that you try to change just the mirror first, and order the base separately if it turns out that you need a new one.

Items 3, 4, and 5 have the same part# in these diagrams:
manual mirror
auto-dim mirror

The stem and base are different between 04 and 05, but I would need to be convinced they're different between 05 and 06.

Just received my auto dimming mirror this morning. A few questions.

The new mirror does not have an cover pieces for the mounting arm. Are these reused from the original mirror?

Someone mentioned that they lost their ability to use their key remote after switching mirrors. Is this something I should expect? If so, what should I expect the dealer to charge me to reset it?

Yes, I think you have to reuse the original cover pieces.
Regarding the key remote reset: I wondered the same thing - I called the MA who told me it was just the keyless receiver/antenae in the mirror, & the code is stored in the body control module. He said switching the mirrors shouldn't require a reset.
I do have an '06 though & ended up pushing the receiver up into my headliner (https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=91925)

anybody know if the Cabrio and Coupe use the same? My wife got the auto-dim/homelink on her Cabrio (which we are selling) and I'd like to swap mirrors.

I was able to install my auto dimming mirror without any problems. As stated, the cover pieces are reused. No issues with the remote.

Very nice upgrade from the standard mirror.

I believe they are the same, only the mount (to the car) is different.

the Cabrio has squarish covers and the Coupe more round. If they get reused, then that make sense and I'll give it a go.

couldn't make it work and the Cabrio is sold. Classic MINI is telling me over $400 list and $328 for the Homelink only mirror now. How much are people paying? They told me there was a price increase.

I've changed the smaller mirror on my 04 MC for one out of a 06 MC. The mounts are the same, but the plastic cover over the mount on the 2006 is larger. I was a little worried it wouldn't work, but to my delight it fit like a glove!

I know this is an old thread, but I see a questions asked that I have an answer to.

I just removed my '03 mirror and there does not seem to be wiring.

Now it could be the wiring is buried up in the headliner, but it is certainly not in the base like later Minis.

Hmmm, no wiring? Must be that your keyfob receiver is somewhere else?
(were there other ?s you were looking for answers to?)

I have no idea where the keyfob receiver is for the '02s and '03s, but it seems to work.

I found another thread where someone had to tap into power and place a ground on an '03, so it would appear this wasn't added until later.

Did you get the Homelink mirror? And, was the install just a matter of twisting your mirror off and installing the new one?

I have had the sunroof trim out of my car and there is a plug up there that isn't used. Can someone tell me what the Homelink power plug looks like and possibly the wire colors?
