Why mount tow hook?

I see a few pics here and there with the tow hook mounted. Is there a reason for this? Or is it just a style issue?

Style issue. If you paint them, they do look pretty good.

About 5 years ago, tow hooks were pretty popular...

Ok. Cool, then I am going to try to make a wind up looking key to go there.

I used RED Plasti-Kote dip on mine and love the look. If you race it has to be in place.

Thanks Twister. That makes sense as most pics were at a track or looked like it. I guess it makes it quiker to clear the debris after a oops.

twOMINIs, how did you get through the M7 grill to mount the hook? Did you just cut as little grill as possible to get it through?

I used a paint pen that I picked up at a local hobby store. It didnt last too long but I liked it while it lasted.

I havent mounted it with the new grill...that's why those pictures will be posted soon. Onasled has a slick set up that's posted elsewhere with pictures.

Whhhhyyyyyyy?????

Not meant to ruffle any feathers here, but I think that purposely displaying your tow hook is just plain silly. It serves no purpose to me, other than to say to others that you're such a novice motorer, that get your MINI stuck an awful lot, so you decided to just leave the damn thing on all the time. (As an aside, do you live in Buffalo or Syracuse? Have to deal with snow a lot?)

Why call so much attention to that tiny detail, a detail that 99.9% of people don't know what it's for? Yeah, if you race you might need it, (while you're racing) I hear you, but how many of you who proudly brandish your tow hook really race?

Have we run out of original ideas about how to make our ride stand out in a crowd so badly, that painting a tow hook has become fashionable? If that is the case, my my MINI forever remain a "square".

With that being said, the rides listed above are most assuredly schweeet rides, I'd like to go on record saying. Nice job people, but like I said, I'll never understand the tow hook embellishment.

i love the way it looks. so many people don't even know what a mini is and ask too many questions as it is. the best one i get (and i get it a lot),"Is that the fuel cut off switch?" uuummmm no

i painted it with the G2 brake caliper paint kit when i did the claipers. it turned out nice.

Well for us who have replaced the front grill, the options are quite limited. You can cut the grill and leave a hole or cut the grill and leave the tow hook.

I'm trying to figure a way to cut the grill but not have to keep the tow hook in. Something like that rubber onasled uses around the hook but without the hook actually in.

It's just a detail, I think you're being a bit harsh... I too hope it doesn't catch on, but I think it is creative.

That's not a tow hook. That's where you pull on the cord to wind up the motor. Make sure the driver is in the seat first, then jump out of the way when you let go!

I have been thinking of buying another one,and leaving one in the front and back for the winter. If I do go into a ditch, not having to install it in 3 feet of snow would be good.

You have DSC? If you do you won't be going into a ditch unless something seriously goes wrong.
Driving around WMASS during this freezing snow sleet storm the car handled awesome. Around a corner it wasn't making it and the DSC light starts blinking and the car brake stears right throught it was awesome.

I don't have DSC,the car does handle awesome, but if a group of Bambis are in the way or some idiot is passing and the choice is a head on,or the ditch,I'm going for the ditch.

For those who have to park around Manhattan, the tow hooks (especially the rear) would be a good protection from those bastards that can't parallel park their cars. At least it will make a dent in their bumper when they try to "push" your car to fit their car. In my old car I purposely left my hitch ball on my hitch. A lot of people hit the hitch ball....too bad for them. Oh well....you got the idea.....

How'd you go about doing the match color on the scoop? Paint, replaced, etc?
