R57 Openameter backup camera replacement

Just a quick write up on how I replaced the openameter with a backup camera monitor that I got from adafruit, and a 3d printed housing for the monitor. I've provided all of the links to the stl files a few photo's of how I wired it internally. I won't go into detail on how I wired the camera, because that's all over this forum. If you don't own a 3d printer and want to do this, I will be happy to print one and ship it to you at cost; just let me know.

To power the
camera camera
, I used the backup light wire under the rear right trunk area where some amps are placed. There is a bundle of wires that I tapped into for the backup power (You can find more about this on the forum with a search, but I can give you wire colors if needed). I also had to pick up a

for the camera to overcome the BMW pulse signal that would cause the camera to puke after a few seconds, due to interference. I picked a camera that had a positive power line that ran back up the same RCA cable, to power the display when the car is in reverse. The RCA cable carries the negative current back through it's wiring automagically so I wired the displays negative trace (black wire) to the ground lead on the RCA end (yellow cable).

The screen works pretty well, other than being bright as hell at night. I drilled two additional holes to take advantage of the two buttons on the display to lower contrast and flip the screen, but i didn't install them myself. I determined that it would be easier to relocate the buttons to the back the housing, instead of running leads down to the buttons. For now though, I made sure the contrast was set to the lowest value and the flip was set correctly when I put it in. The lowest setting is much brighter than you need, honestly. the flip was set exactly how I needed it to be from the factory. The 3d printed housing for the display is snug to say the least, but it needs to be.

Good write up and great project. Thx for sharing. I hate that damn useless waste of a gauge! I want to put a boost gauge in mine.

Wow! really like this, since youve already done it , would you consider making and selling a kit?

I will certainly print anyone the housing for the lcd if they'd like one but I don't know if I'll sell a kit. If you'd like one, PM me and i'll get cracking. Might ask for a few bucks for shipping and plastic costs, but nothing major.
