Intercooler advice

Hi I'm looking for advice on which intercooler to buy for my 2009 Mini Cooper S. These are the three I've found so far:

Helix 2nd gen: http://store.helix13.com/helix-2nd-g...e-intercooler/

ATM: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...r-is-back.html

Wagner: http://new.minimania.com/part/G2NME3160/

Is there any others you would recommend? If not which of the above would you recommend and why?

Cheers!

Hi spjonez!

Wagner is one of the best, if not the best in the world. We do carry other brands, but Wagner is worth it. This description pretty much says it all:

ABOUT WAGNER TUNING
Founded in 1993 in Germany, the company started off as a speed shop in 2007 and transformed into a manufacturing and designing shop for inter-coolers,downpipes, intakes and exhaust manifolds. With the business doing great in Germany and the high demand for products here in the states, they decided to open up a US office located in California to stock products reducing delivery times.

Using only the best technology to design products, the Faro 7axis scan arm with laser scanner and stratasys rapid prototype printer and the latest cad & fem Software is utilized to develop quality products. This way every product design is 100% accurate on fitment and allows the largest inter-coolers that can fit without major modifications to your vehicle. Product development is performed here in the states with complete in house design and engineering capabilities.

Product comes with a 5-year manufacturers limited warranty.

Plus, we have 40 years experience with the brand on both street and track, and received the first new BMW MINI in the U.S. So, we're happy to help with any and all questions.

Here are a couple articles and a video that may help as well!

The only downside to the Wagner (from what I can tell) is since I have a 2009 Mini Cooper S I can't use the performance facelift/competitive versions that use the tube-fin core.

How big of a difference is there between those and the one I linked? I live in Canada so our temperatures are typically cooler then many places. On a hot track day it's 25-30C with most in the lower to mid 20s.

I was planning on buying the street/track camber plates and the turbo heat shield off your site so combined shipping is another bonus

Hi again! Thanks for asking because we discovered a typo in the description:

the 2007-2010 is: Size 550x110x90 / 550x210x30, 6435cm³ volume

the 2011+ versions: Size 550x110x90 / 550x210x50, 8745cm³ Volume (for both performance & competition)

For the Canadian climate, the Performance 2007-2010 version should work just fine!

Hope this helps, and please ask if you have any other questions!

many, many threads on this topic in the Mods - Powertrain forum.

I have the Wagner, no regrets. I datalogged IATs with the stock vs. Wagner, the difference is amazing. I posted my install experience and data on one of the Wagner threads.

Helix 2nd gen - if it had been available when I made my buy decision, it would have been a tough call vs. the Wagner.

ATM = Helix 1st gen, but without the polished finish.

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of these. The fact that the Wagner uses the OEM mounting points (vs. just hanging from the hoses like the Helix 1st gen) was important to me. One thing to look at is whether your car has the lower crash bar behind the bottom front bumper cover, I had to modify mine to make the Wagner fit. I don't think the 2009 has that feature, but check how your car was built.

I installed the (Facelift) competition version http://www.wagner-tuning.com/Competi...049_p_101.html in my 2008 without any problems. Purchased direct from Wagner and it shipped from Germany. Quality is great and you can really tell the difference on hot days.
