The switches are "elastomeric" - a rubber membrane with some conductive pads, pressed onto copper areas of the circuit board when you click the switch. The result is a low cost switch with less-than-ideal performance.
As you discover, you can easily make & break the contact by varying the pressure onto the elastomeric.
I installed a circuit in a friends MINI recently (Hi Dan!) and his passenger side switch was just loose in the panel - no positive click action at all. Very difficult to use the switch :(

Received my Circuit from Ian today & 45 minutes later it was installed & configured. I ordered the auto-up windows, track-mode (auto dsc off) & 9v garage opener. All work exactly as advertised. Product and documentation are great! Very cool, 007-style mod
