I heard the factory fork mount carrier is the same as or very similiar to the Thule carrier?
I also think i heard that some aftermarket ones are usable, but needs some modifications before they'll fit.
Details anyone?

Thanks!

d2mini,
do you already have a roof rack system such as Thule/Yakima or the OEM one?
Sorry, not sure what's you're exactly asking about.

I'm not sure if the Thule or Yakima fork mounts fit properly on the OEM rack.

I'm not sure about the OEM fork mount fitting on the Thule/Yakima racks.. Lol, why would anyone do that though.

You're gonna get much more variety with aftermarket. From what I've seen, the OEM fork mounts are of two kinds:

- The one that "swallows" the front wheel
- The one that holds up the down tube

I'm wondering what fork mount bike carriers fit on the Factory Roof Rack bars, and which are recommended.
Obviously the factory ones would work, but are aftermarket ones better?
I don't have it yet, but i will be purhcasing the factory base rack.
Sorry if that wasn't clear.

The main advantage of the aftermarket is that you don't have holes in your roof.

If you can get past that (I couldn't), then get the OEM rack. It's a more sturdy attachment system than the aftermarket racks.

Ok, i guess i'm still not being clear.

I am purchasing the OEM roof rack. The main bars.

Then i don't know what to do about the bike carrier attachement that attaches to these main bars and holds your bike. Do i buy the factory one or aftermarket.

Is this clear now? I don't know how else to explain it.

Woops. I didn't read this closely enough (it was still on the early side here in L.A.)

It's all clear now.

I bought the Thule wide mouth (neither of my bikes have down tubes so I couldn't use original factory rack) I got the "VW" adaptor for the wide mouth added a washer and it works great. If you need pictures or instructions on "How To" let me know.

One bike of ours has a very thick aero downtube and the other is thin aluminum and says "do not clamp" so I adapted the Velovise trays. It was a lot of work, Grendel's solution seems better.

Also, someone has actually drilled the Thule load bars and mounted those on the factory uprights. That way you can use any Thule carrier.l
