So, I stopped by a local body shop to ask for an estimate to paint the outside black pieces to match the body color. He took a look at it and said he would not do it because of the texture on the plastic. He said he could paint it, but it would chip/crack/flake off. So, he said he would not touch it.

My question is for those that have had it done. Where did you do it, and how? Is the paint coming off? How did it stick?

If anyone in northern NJ has done it, please tell me the shop so I can call and inquire. Also, how much did it cost you?

Thanks.

Dan

When the body shop painted the aero kit, I also had them do the arches. So far, no problem with chipping whatsoever. Many people sand down the texture to a smooth finish. However, even with the texture, they're not noticeable once painted.

Hey Dan,

The fella you asked regarding the molding being sprayed may be an idiot. I know a few people who've painted similar trims to this kind. There is a good amount of prepping involved with painting this b/c of the texture (sanding/ priming/ wet sanding...and so on) but they can get painted. People usually use some type of flex-allowable component in the paint so that this stuff doesn't crack.

I live in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ...there's a place on Route 17 North in my town across the road from Starbucks...the dude to talk to is George. He's done a ton of hot rods. Email me if you've got any other questions: italianjobmini03@aol.com.

Hey, thanks for the info. It just seems like he did not want to go through the prep work to get it done.

Does anyone have cost? Not an estimate, but what they actually paid. And is that price with removing the plastics yourself, or having the shop do it?

Thanks.

I got my aero kit/wheel arches painted through the dealer. They charged me $2600 for the aero kit/painting/installation and an extra $300 for the painting of the wheel arches.

I've been toying w/ this idea for over 1 & 1/2 years now.
Many people say they've had NO cracking...while others insist it will crack..eventually. (no one will define eventually)
I've seen the pricing range from $2k...to over $3k...(including removing, sanding, wet sanding, flex agents in paint, and re-assembly...etc)
I've seen many cars...done up this way.....
Some look incredible... (as if the car originally came this way)...while others looked as if they bought a can of spray paint and went to town.

I have a very good friend who's a body shop guy and I know him for 30+ years.
He will not paint my MCS. He will definately no guarantee the work.
Others will paint it... but not guarantee the work.

If anyone knows of someone on LI or the surrounding area...who will paint it... has a history of painting it...and guarantee the work.... for less than $2k.....
I'm listening

Peace,
D

Painting the black wheel surrounds and having it not crack or fall off is definitely doable. I've painted ATV plastic (banshee for the sand dunes) and had it last for years. The newer polyurethane paints are fairly flexible if not put on way too thick. You need to sand the plastic with 150 grit paper, spray on a flex bonding agent (to make the primer stick) before the primer and use flexible primer. This primer is made for repairing flexible bumpers which are much more flexible than the black plastic. Sand the primer with 400 grit wet paper until smooth. The rest of the paint is applied in the usual manor. The flexible primer is a ***** to apply, it looks like spraying fiberglass from a chopper gun due to strands in the paint and is a little harder to sand but will give you a durable finish. I haven't done my car because of concerns of rock chips from the tires. If any wants to the know the part numbers for the materials I've used let me know. Hope this helps.
Dan
