Help id this intake

Hey guys, I got my mini cooper a while back and i am finally in the mood (financially) for some changes.

I wanted to know if this intake filter I have is replaceable or I can wash it...like K&Ns and all.

So I looked at it, and it says ALTA on the metal box, and alta on the blue tube however the filter doesn't look like ALTA...could the previous owner installed a different one?

HELP

also, if it is not ALTA what is it? and can I buy ALTA and install it myself?

here is a picture for you guys to tell me what to do :(

yea thats the alta silicone hose and the alta housing but thats not the alta foam filter. you can buy the filter straight from alta. i believe those cone filters are harder to clean than the alta foam filter.

Any idea what type of filter it is? If its K&N I'd like to buy a cleaning kit unless a new one from ALTA is cheaper. Hmm

From the reddish-filter media hue, and the screen size I'd bet it's a K&N of some type.

So what does NAM suggest? Spend the 51 dollars on a new filter or.... 13 on a cleaning kit lol.... This is silly. I bought the car like this :(

It looks like a K&N. The blue ones are NM Engineering Products.
You can use either cleaning kit for either filter. Only diff. is the color.

Do you have a Cooper S or a Cooper? That makes a huge difference on if this will fit or not.

I'd say get a cleaning kit and keep the current filter. If it doesn't clean to your satisfaction then replace the filter.

Holy smokes! Look at that strut tower bar! Makes mine look like a toothpick...

Looks like a K&N filter to me, but there are plenty of eBay lookalikes. It should have K&N (or a K&N part number) embossed on the flange someplace, if indeed it is. But you might have better luck with drivetrain-related queries on the drivetrain board.

Most likely K&N...even if it's not, it still the same type....you can go to any motorcyle shop and get K&N cleaner and re-oil kit cheap...don't over oil it tho...

Buy a cleaning kit and keep the filter. Most local Auto Parts stores carry the K&N cleaning kit for about $20.

It's auto. I'm tempted to take it off to see if it's a version 1 madness filter, or a K&N. The cleaning Kit is around 16 dollars. Too cold for now to work on it myself.

HAHA, I just realized that the filter is already on your car. I guess I'm a little slower than I thought I was.
