Engine Tempature Gauge?

Hey Guys,

Just bought a Mini Cooper last week and I love it! I just have a small problem, there is no tempature gauge and it's really annoying! Does anyone know where I can get a factory or aftermarket one that fits well with the funky Mini interior setup. Which one is better?

Thanks!

Here is mine plugged in. Showing water temperature, air intake temperature, electrical system voltage, and manifold air pressure (correlates to boost pressure).

MINI also offers a JCW gauge pack that gives you an analog gauge that sits next to the tach. I don't think as many people have that, though.

There's also these. They're quite pricey but fit in better with the look of the dash.

I use an Aeroforce Interceptor. Plugs into the OBDII port. Similar to a Scanguage but in a round gauge. Also has programmable lights that you can set to be shift lights, warning when temp too high, or just about anything the gauge monitors. Also displays boost.

Check out this thread, these are the closest match to the factory gauge Steve at "Custom Mini Shop" is the vendor for these. Here is his # 559-320-0004.

I just put some Marshal gages in my MINI. Boost/Vacuum, water temp, oil pressure, oil temp.

I made the gage pods out of some 2"ABS sewer pipe and 1/8" aluminum sheet stock I had on hand.

Can't beat the simplicity of a gage that plugs into the OBD-II port - like the Edge Insight...

I'm looking for a water temperature gauge for our new 2011 MINI S Convertible, and there are 2 that look interesting, the ScanGauge II ($170) and the UltraGauge ($60). The latter has a bigger display, and appears to be better. The low price amazes me. Both should be easy to install, especially electrically. I'll bet both have batteries, which will be a bother, but probably not a big deal. Any recommendations on these? Thanks. -- Dave

The ScanGauge II doesn't use batteries. It draws power from the OBDii system. I've been quite pleased with mine and have used it also to clear codes on friend's MINIs (I bought an extra cable so I don't have to undo my in-dash routing. Can't speak to the UltraGauge.

Also MINI sells an OEM temp gauge that connects to the CAN bus of the car.

Don't be scared the first time you see it hit 220*, it's supposed to run that hot!

Thanks, that is a very elegant solution, but also very pricey.

Here is something that connects to the OBD and can display information on an Android Phone via a bluetooth connection.

I haven't used this but if you guys think it is a good idea, then may be I will..

Thanks.

With all the requests from owner who would like a temp gauge, I don't know why MINI just doesn't sell software update that will display the temp on the OBC display.

Because it would just scare people if it got to its normal operating temp. These MINIs seem to run hot compared to most peoples standards and thus they would have more complaints about stuff being wrong when it wasn't. Plus lots of people don't even look at the gauges, they are too busy texting.

wait wait, there's no temperature gauge for real? there has to be on somewhere....isnt that a requirement to manufacture cars? otherwise how would you know if you're over heating.

everycar has to have some type of engine temp. gauge

Having a sensor versus having a gauge are two very different things. Of course the engine has a water temp sensor. There is no way a modern engine could run without it. There what you would call an idiot light that would show an overheat condition in the tach display.

I use a PLX OBDII gauge to show the water temp.

Whoa, thanks for the tip about the Ultragauge. My plan was to wait for a buddy of mine to finally upgrade his Droid, so I could use his old phone to just run Torque and get an OBD bluetooth adapter. But since he is dragging his feet, for $60 this is tempting although not very pretty... LOL

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on an UltraGauge II, for $60, and such an easy install. The PLX is a good bit more, looks good, nice analog output, but not worth the extra $'s, near as I can tell.

I did it, I got the UltraGauge, for $60, and it's fantastic. Installation is very easy, although I'm not totally happy with the Velcro solution I've started with. The gauge works great, was easy to setup, and the menu structure is very easy to use, I'd say it's "intuitive." If you're 10% geek, get one, you'll enjoy it. The water temperature is the main reason I got it, but the boost pressure, and other read-outs (there's a total of 6 on each of 3 pages) can be fun, too. I'll repost with an image when I've decided on the final attachment approach. -- Dave

I wonder if this could work for iOS devices....
