Hello,

Someone else has already done the "joeymod" on his countryman, or GeoffreyM do you have more pictures and a small summary of the steps?

Thanks for your answers!

Did you use high temp paint?

You can't do exactly the same thing to halogens as you cannot paint the reflector bowl. You can however paint the extra plastic on the sides without consequences but not too many people do because you still have a huge shiny bowl on the back. I still think it would be cool though to give it a look and maybe try.

I used rustoleum High performance flat black. I did it over two years ago and not a single problem. I use the guide on the 2nd Gen side to figure out how to do it, but basically you take all the clips off the light that hold the two halves together and then pop the whole thing in a 200 degree oven for 6 minutes pry em apart and paint. Scary at first, but think about the abuse the lights have to take.

Got the headlights off the car and ready to pop them in the oven. Aside from the turn signal bulb, did you remove anything else from the headlights before you put it in there? For example, did you remove the halogen bulb or any of its circuitry?

Alright, here are the photos of my Joey mod. I already had the black headlight housings from the factory, so all I planned to do was paint the projector ring and shroud a different color. I thought about doing a dark gray, but ultimately decided to go with a silver color ("Aluminum") to match the stripes and make it look like real metal. Mostly, my goal was to get rid of the last bit of chrome on the exterior of my car. (I even removed each "S" on the scuttles and painted them silver.)

Someday I might paint the black parts a dark grey to lighten it up a bit, but it will definitely do for now.

Thanks guys! It's a fun mod. As everyone says, intimidating but easy. Once you get that first lens off, you feel like the most handy person in the world. I'll do a detailed how-to (unfortunately without pics) if you guys want.

Dpike,

The rings are actually painted body color. I got those and the scuttles painted body color. The rings were $30 a piece ($120 for the set). They had to sand off all the chrome. But they used a machine (and the BMW color code) to get an exact match. Rocky, my guy at Custom Body Shop, is very good.

I'll post up pics of the scuttles in another thread if you want.

Everyone here should allways do write-ups about there mods! That way we know what you learned that worked or didn't work better. We all can soak up all the info from the thread and commit to doing things like putting our headlights in a oven that is on. Plus someone may use different tools/methods that work better for someone else.
Those light did turn out great.

I knew you'd say that! I'll have to put one together. What I'll do is put down a fairly comprehensive set of written instructions. Then, the next time someone does it, hopefully they will snap photos. If so, they can send them to me and I'll insert them in the instructions and the PDF will be available here for all who are interested.

I did mine yesterday using a heatgun. I have the HID so I was scared to go with the oven method. The lens came out easily. the trick is to apply heat on the housing and pry the lens out using a screwdriver. It took me 6 hours total.

The only thing is I spent 1 hour tapping the chrome rings (like the jcw) but when I removed the tape after the paint was dry, the chrome came off. I had to paint everything black. I was pretty upset but at the end I like the look.
