Don't Fear Those Scuttles

I've seen a few new MINI owners express concern about the scuttles and user-replacement. Fear not. These on the second gen are even easier to deal with than the first gen. Pop the bonnet, slide the scuttle carrier forward towards the front of the car, and it will unclip. Disconnect the electrical cable and you're golden. I used new carriers as well as scuttle plates themselves, but this is a matter of choice: you can also just order the graphic insert itself and swap that out. Everything is held together by tabs. Click, snap, ready to return to the car.

Some have expressed that the scuttle plate itself seats a little loose, and requires hot glue or similar. I didn't experience this (yet) but it may be from swapping scuttles on an existing carrier. Dunno.

Anyway, if you're eager to start exterior aesthetic mods, this is a fine place to get your feet wet...

I lost one in a small bumper collision (losing a scuttle was the only damage). After paying $150 for a second set, I double-sided taped them to the carriers.

One of mine ran off with a new friend after I parked in an unattended lot, so I'm about to put a replacement on. Yeesh! That's an expensive theft, but really, big picture, not a big deal...
