removing and installing bonnet stripes

My wifes 2005 cooper has factory stripes that chipped on the edges. The dealership gave me new stripes but I need to know how to remove the old ones and replace the new ones. Ideas?

I think you just have to pick at the old stripes even though that's a huge pain in the donkey hole. Make sure to clean your hood well before installing the new ones. I hear a wash/clay bar is the way to go before installing things like vinyl and window tint.

Good luck.

You can carefully pick at it with your finger and pull them off. It might break in places. I personally use a heat gun to help remove them. Once it is off you can use goo gone to remove any adhesive residue. After that, do like Act 04 said and clay bar the area. You want it smooth and clean when installing the new stripes. I also suggest you lay the new stripes down with a water/soap solution. This will allow the stripes to float and and you can shift them around for the best positioning.

Like Fatherdeth said- use heat- I used a hairdryer and pulled really slowly, it took 15 min per stripe, but no tape residue. Have fun.

I actually just pulled my stripes off yesterday. Granted my stripes are relatively new (4,500 miles), they did come off pretty easily. I agree with the heat. I used a heat gun on the lowest setting, and found that it was way too much heat. I had to hold the heat gun about 3ft away to get the stripes warm, but not burning hot that it would just melt. Hair dryer would most likely do the trick, but hold it further away until you find the right distance. Good luck

Hairdryer is safer than a heat gun, might take a bit longer though.

the ratio you want in your water/soap sprayer is 10:1 water to dish soap. Buy a vinyl application squeegee if you don't have one, they work wonders.

I replaced them yesterday. The stickers peeled right off, I washed where they were, taped as a guide, sprayed with soap and water and stuck them. Not bad at all. We'll see how long they last. Thanks
